News THE HURON EXPOSITOR, Dec. 1. 2004-13 Huron's Habitat for Humanity group getting closer to affiliation, planning first house project By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor As Huron County's Habitat for Humanity group prepares for its goal of building its first house next summer, it is coming closer to becoming a recognized affiliate of the national organization, Habitat Canada. "We're three-quarters of the way to our application for full affiliate status. It's a long process we've been working on since last January," says Huron Habitat chair Paul Dyck. Huron Habitat's steering committee met at Egmondville United Church last Thursday where the Habitat Canada vice president of affiliate services and the affiliate services coordinator attended to lend support during the application process. "Everyone wants to know when we're building. We're trying to get things together to build in the late summer or early fall," said Family Partner Committee chair Terry Taylor of Wingham. Habitat Canada vice-president of affliate services Maureen Crawford responded that the goal in Huron is "very realistic." "Eight -five per cent of the volunteers want to help with the build but 75 per cent of the work is before the build happens," she said. Before building a house within the boundaries of Huron County, members of the steering committee must first get funding in place, select a site, get commitment for labour and material, as well as initiate the process for family selection. She encouraged the local steering committee that Huron might be ahead of Habitat groups in the cities because of all the skills offered by members of the farming community. While steering committee members all emphasized that they need more volunteers, Dyck said the steering committee still needs a representative from Clinton, since most of the rest of Huron County is represented. "Our steering committee becomes our board of directors Paul Dyck (at centre), chair of Habitat for Humanity Huron County, left Terry Taylor, Dale Taylor, Lois Hayter, and John Schenk. after we become an affiliate," he said. Dyck said Habitat Canada expects potential affiliates to go through the long process of creating committees and policies and applying to become an affiliate because they want the group to have a long-term viability. "An affiliate holds the mortgage for a house they build for 20 years and that's a long commitment," he said. Huron's application is expected to go to Habitat Canada by the end of January so the local group could be affliated by spring. with several steering committee members from In anticipation, the Huron group is beginning to plan to select a site to build a home this summer and is writing policies that will help it choose a family for the house. "We're building simple; decent homes. This will give a family a good solid home to go forward with," said Crawford. The Huron group will be meeting on Dec.. 1 to discuss the best location in Huron County for its first house. Any interested volunteers can visit the Huron group's website at www.habitathuroncounty.ca where they can fill out a volunteer form. ILicensed for Sheet Metal. Refrigeration.
