A joint project of the
counties of Huron and Perth
and the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food is
finding a new way to put
local food producers on the
map.
With funding from
Agriculture and Agri -Food
Canada, local food producers
will be able to showcase their
businesses to local residents
and tourists. The map of the
area featuring locations and
descriptions of their
businesses.
Jane Muegge, Ministry of
Agriculture and Food
regional information
coordinator, hopes this
calender will help bring more
tourists into the area and help
area shoppers find farm -to -
the -table items.
"Lots of people like to pick
out their own produce and
see the countryside," Muegge
said.
This initiative, Muegge
said, will "hopefully dovetail
with our tourism area as well
as local people becoming
very aware of what's
available to them just right
next door."
Expected to have 100,000
copies produced and
distrubuted across Ontario,
the map will be available in
the spring.
The map will include
Huron -Perth producers of
vegetables, preserves, honey,
baked goods, herbs, fish,
pork, beef, fruits, chocolate
and others.
Also, local businesses that
sell products produced in
Huron -Perth will be included
on the map.
"We'd love to have them
all on there," said Muegge.
To be included on the map,
participants must pay a $25
fee which provides a location
marker on the map, a listing
and a Farm -to -Table sign.
"We do want to get as
many people involved as we
can," said Muegge. "We
don't want to miss anybody."

Cribbing, or stabilizing a
vehicle with various sizes of
wooden boards, is an
essential first step to ensure
the safety of the victims and
the firefighters, who must
climb all over the vehicle to
extricate them.
"If someone has a back or
neck injury, a quarter of an
inch can mean their life. You
have to make the car as solid
as possible," says Phillips.
They also learned some of
Jones's tips, such as using
shaving cream to absorb
glass particles that are
otherwise impossible to
clean up and using a $14 tire
lug wrench, that can take off
a door hinge with much less
noise than an air gun.
Other tips include carrying
golf tees to close off leaking
gas lines and using
plexiglass instead of
blankets to protect victims

from breaking glass since
they're less likely to panic
when they can see what's
happening.
As well, they discussed
some of the new technology
in vehicles, including as
many as 23 air bags with
multiple batteries to operate
them.
"You have to be conscious
of where they are because if
you set one off by mistake,
you're going to go flying,"
says Huron East fire chief
Marty Bedard.
Phillips says knowledge of
modern vehicle technology
such as power doors, power
seats and power steering
columns can also make
firefighters' jobs easier
when extricating victims.
"We can utilize them to
our advantage before we
disconnect them," he says.
However, since it's
impossible to get new cars to
train with, Phillips says
firefighters need to learn
how to adapt to new
technology when they
encounter it.
"We only ever seem to be
able to get cars that are six
to 10 years old and then rust
can make it harder for us to
cut them open. But, after this
training, the guys won't be
afraid to tackle any vehicle,"
he says.
