Strategic planning
for Huron East
needed: Laviolette
By Susan Hundertmark

Huron East needs a shared
vision for the future, says
economic development
officer Ralph Laviolette.
He told Huron East council
at its Nov. 16 meeting that he
is beginning work on a
strategic plan for the
municipality with the help of
Laura Lee Dam, a consultant
with a number of provincial
ministries.
"You need a plan in order
to succeed. If you have no
plan, you will just be reactive
to situations," Dam told
council during a presentation.
"This is the stuff that
grounds your municipality. It
is your preferred future and it
drives your organizations,"
she said.
Laviolette said that after
the work of amalgamating
Seaforth, Brussels, McKillop,
Tuckersmith and Grey into
one municipality during the
past three years, it is now
time to move forward with a
shared plan.
"The time is ripe to plan
where we're going. We have
a strong economy, a strong
informal network and a hard
working council," he said.
Laviolette passed out a
questionnaire for spectators
at the council meeting, which
was held at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre as part of
council's recent attempts to
involve ratepayers throughout
Huron East.
The questionnaire asked
for input on the strengths and
weaknesses of the
municipality, issues that
council should concentrate on
to make the municipality
more vibrant, safe and
friendly, thoughts and ideas
that should be included in a
mission or vision statement
and whether council should
create a strategic plan for the
future.
"This is an exciting time
for you. You had an arranged
marriage and now you can
look forward and move
ahead," said Dam.
She said town hall
meetings and public meetings
will be held to get public
input on a plan for the future.
Laviolette said the first
annual general meeting of the
Huron East Chamber of
Commerce will be held in
January where a strategic
plan for the municipality will
be discussed further.
"We can't continue
flogging the area when it's
not ready and have land that's
not ready to develop. We
have to make it attractive
because we're competing
with areas that are much
more attractive," he said.
"With a strategic plan, the
public can give council a
better view of reality," said
Laviolette.
