But, Bill McLaughlin has been recognized this year as the winner of the Seaforth Citizenship award for Civic Service. "I just like doing things for people. It's kinda nice to help make life easier for people at tough times," says the businessman of 40 years in Seaforth. Born in Dublin, McLaughlin has lived in Seaforth for 62 years, where he's run a General Motors dealership for 25 years and been a longtime member of the Seaforth Lions Club. One of the ways he's done that for many years is by cooking up turkeys and giving them to local shut-in seniors or to neighbours who have experienced a recent loss. "I like cooking for people," he says. Bill McLaughlin Another way is to open up McLaughlins' showroom to local seniors every Christmas so they have a warm place to watch the Santa Claus parade. "As parades or events in town are going past his shop, he cleans out the showroom and then goes and picks up the elderly around town who need a ride or just the company and brings them to the dealership for a warm, dry place to watch and visit,' says Deb Ward in an awards presentation Saturday night at the Seaforth Business Improvement Area (BIA) Christmas dinner. As a Lions Club member, he's worked on the group's Octoberfest and the TV bingo. He is also a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church. He also likes to give out gift certificates for dinners at local restaurants. "Bill does a lot of work behind the scenes that most people would be unaware of," says the award presentation speech. "Bill wishes to remain anonymous with his contributions to the structures and events within the town that he supports. He just likes to help out when and where he can." Sandra Melady wins annual award in Seaforth for Service to Sports By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Because soccer is a sport that she loves and because she likes to be involved in her children's lives, Sandra Melady has been a big part in getting a travel soccer league started in Seaforth. And, it's an accomplishment she's been honoured for this year with the Seaforth Citizenship award for Service to Sports. "You might as well help out when your kids are involved," she says. "It's good to be involved." But, when Melady saw that local kids were needing more competition than they were experiencing at the town's houseleague soccer on Wednesday nights, she helped former recreation director Graham Nesbitt organize a number of travel teams in the North Huron soccer league. "It's not a really serious league but it is competitive and that's gotten the numbers to go up in soccer in town," she says. Melady has spent many hours during the past Sandra Melody several years registering local kids in the travel and houseleague soccer, recruiting coaching staff, organizing locations and preparing sower fields. While she's still working on forming an executive to run local soccer, Melady is hoping to attract more children to travel soccer and increasing the current four teams. ".I hope it's growing. We'll see," she says, Price looking for ideas for next fundraising project From Page 1 committee, Price's recent project was camping out at Egmondville United Church during its "Fill a Tent for Lent" project last spring. While the church collected food for the Seaforth food bank, Price raised $6,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society during a weeklong campout in front of the church in April. "It had been in my mind to do something.like that for a while and the tent was going to be there," he says. Price has been a member of Egmondville United most Church for 25 years, where he and his wife Gail are always Quoted helping out at church functions such as church dinners and sales. "Whenever I see the movie It's A Wonderful Life, 1 think of Bill, a quiet man who loves his family, his church and his community," says Carolanne Doig in her nomination form. "He constantly does what he can to make his community a better place, just by caring and he's a generous person who never hesitates to help those in need," she says. Price says he hopes to top 'I lust really like helping people and seeing them smile,' -- 11 Price his weeklong campout with another project this year but hasn't determined what he'll do yet. "Not the tent thing again - It has to be something different because it's so tough asking people for money," he says', adding he's been asked to fundraise for the Huron Hospice next. "I'm looking for ideas," he smiles.
