"We're always looking for ways to make a difference but it's hard to find a way to do that when you're just 11 or 12. The class just took off with this project because this is something they can do," says Grade 7 teacher Theresa Wild. The class's project is participating in Operation Christmas Child, which through Samaritan's Purse delivers millions of gift - filled shoeboxes to children around the world who are the victims of war, disease, disaster or poverty. While the project started out as something for the 25 Grade 7 students to do as a religion assignment, it was soon expanded to include the whole school. Susan Hundertmark photo St. James Grade 7 students Don Nigh, Matt Nigh and Alanah Campbell pack and stack up shoeboxes full of toys, school supplies, toiletries and candy destined to travel the globe to help needy children as part of an Operation Christmas Child project. "We held a large assembly and everybody wanted to participate," says principal Donna Gregus. "I had to go back twice for more boxes." The school is dropping off the donated boxes to the Exeter Pentecostal Church, which is sending them to Samaritan's Purse. Wild says while St. James has never participated in Operation Christmas Child before, she would like to see it become an annual project. "The kids are all so excited to think they made someone smile at Christmastime," she says. Christmas Bureau accepting donations Dec. 6 to io The Huron County Christmas Bureau is gearing up for the second year at Egmondville United Church and will be accepting donations from Dec. 6 to 10. Last year, Seaforth helped 51 families, including 120 children have a merry Christmas and organizer Deb Jamieson is expecting a higher demand this year. "The need seems to be steadily increasing," she says. Local statistics say that in 2001, 645 families in Huron County earned less than $10,000 a year and 1,420 families in Huron County earned less than $20,000 a year. As well, 2 665 Huron County children live in low income families; 1,580 of those children are living in single parent families. "The Christmas Bureau provides for half of the disadvantaged families in Huron County and we can only hope that their extended families take care of the rest," says Joan Van den Broeck, of the Huron -Perth Children's Aid Society. "There are people out there who can't bring themselves to come to the bureau," adds Jamieson. As usual, the Christmas Bureau is looking for new toys and new clothing, especially socks, underwear and pajamas in a variety of children's sizes, along with food and donations of money. Angel tags, allowing donors to choose a boy or girl of various age groups to provide a gift for, are available through the local schools and churches. Families who need help can register beginning Nov. 22 by calling 1-800-265-5198 or 524-7356, ext. 3271. A Christmas Bureau truck will be travelling the route of the Santa Claus parade in Seaforth on Nov. 26 for people wishing to drop off their donations during the parade. Drop boxes are also being set up at Sally's Closet, Sumthing Special, Dollar Haven, the Winthrop store, Seaforth Foodland and the Egmondville Country Market.
