E. of Goderlch 440:0362 CURRENT CURRENT News Municipal donations will help clinic upgrade building, computers From Page 1 "I need to communicate to some of the people directly involved first," he said Monday. The meeting minutes also say that the SCH foundation and the Huron -Perth Healthcare Alliance are in agreement to "the reactivation of the Medical Clinic Trust," a "corporation of the hospital and a partner of the Alliance and Foundation," which will manage the lands and the clinic. It will also be used as the board of management for the clinic, operated as a business centre and each of the doctors will be a tenant of the building. Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler, who is also chair of the Seaforth Community Development Trust, said the donation, especially if it goes towards the computer equipment, will go a long way in helping the Seaforth and Huron East community. "I think it's a great thing for Seaforth with spin-offs into Huron East. The hospital foundation ig setting up a trust that will revitalize the clinic and I hope it attracts more doctors and makes better working conditions for everyone at the clinic," said Steffler. "I'm very happy that we're giving them the money," he said, adding that the trust decided to make the donation at its Nov. 4 meeting. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan is quoted in the minutes saying the municipality "feels the need to be a partner in the operation of the clinic." Dr. Percival argues for retaining surgery at Seaforth's hospital From Pogo 1 Clinton any time soon," Percival says Seaforth's two operating rooms and two anaesthesia machines are going to be necessary to the Alliance. "Surgeries have to be done somewhere," she says, adding that she doesn't see how keeping surgery in Seaforth would add to the Alliance's costs. "This would make Seaforth more viable, leave OR spaces in Stratford for those oh so important knee and hip rgplacements and help keep my skills up as well," says Percival in her letter to Williams. "I just cannot see how Clinton could handle all the cases and not end up with a backlog and even longer waiting lists," she says. Percival says orthopedic surgery was performed in Seaforth until Dr. Fowler left in May but the service has not been continued with the hiring of a new orthopedic surgeon in Stratford. "We understood the new fellow would come back but everything ground to a halt with the budget process," she says. Williams says that while offering surgery at only two Alliance sites is a "preliminary suggestion" in the budget process, he'll be meeting with Percival to discuss her suggestions. "It's a bit premljure to say if we can do it or not. But, I'll be talking to surgeons and anesthesiologists. We're continuing to look at the issue," he says: "I'm open to looking at different scenarios." Employees of Seaforth Community Hospital wave at passing cars during an information picket last Tuesday to protest against provincial pressure on local hospitals. Hospital unions protest push by province to balance budget By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Protesting the province's push to force Ontario hospitals to balance their budgets, a handful of support workers at Seaforth Community Hospital held an information picket at noon last Tuesday. "We don't think going after people's contracts is the way to balance the budgets of hospitals," said Deb Ward, site chair of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Ward was referring to rumours that the province $500 REWARD For information leading to the return of a stolen Honda 50 motor bike from Egmondville, late Friday night, October 1, 2004. Deb Hirdes, president of CUPE Local 4727, said the union has been worried since the Ontario Hospitals Association president told Premier Dalton McGuinty in a letter that the only way hospitals can balance their budgets is by opening up contracts and stripping workers of their successor rights and job security. "When he's (McGuinty's) been asked the question of whether he'll do that, he's avoided the answer so that starts to be worrisome for us." said Hirdes. She said Bill 29 in British Columbia stripped hospital workers of their job security in 2001 and 6,000 workers lost their jobs. She said the others were hired hack at $9 an hour with no benefits or pensions. "We're losing our rights and they'll contract out our jobs at minimum wage. If you think SARS was bad, try dealing with it with support staff that isn't trained in infection control," said Ward. CUPE represents 32 support workers at SCH, including housekeepers, dietary workers, registered practical nurses, medical records staff, clerical staff and rehabilitation assistants. Ward said the protest was not aimed at the Huron -Perth Healthcare Alliance but at the provincial government and its insistence that hospitals balance their budgets. While a balanced budget plan for the Alliance could lead to 72 job losses throughout the four member hospitals, Ward said local workers don't know yet how many will be affected in Seaforth. "We haven't been given exact numbers at this hospital but we don't expect to be left alone either," she said. "We're not saying there isn't waste out there but we need to go from the top down, not the bottom up," said Ward. While no other information pickets are planned locally, Hirdes said hospital unions will he picketing Huron - Bruce Carol Mitchell's office on Nov. 26 and attending a "Keep Your Promises" labour rally in Toronto on Nov. 27.
