THS HURON EXPOSITOR, Nov. 10, 2004.13
Pheasant season under way at Hullett Marsh
By Ronda Wicks
Special to the Expositor
The announcement of the
Ministry of Natural Resources
(MNR) and Ducks Unlimited
Canada (DUC) contributions to
the establishment of the Hullett
Provincial Wildlife Area on
Hydro Line Rd, one concession
north of Hwy 8 between
Kinburn and Sanctuary Roads
happened 25 years ago.
Much has changed since then
as the MNR and DUC have
added The Friends of Hullett
Inc (FOH) to their management
team. .
The FOH is a registered non-
profit organization established
in December 1998 from a group
of like-minded marsh
volunteers.
Since then, an elected Board
of Directors for the Hullett
Provincial Wildlife Area,
volunteer their time to research,
initiate and oversee marsh
projects.
The FOH assist with such
things as trail maintenance,
observation towers, hunting
blinds (including two handicap
accessible hunting blinds), the
distribution of the Hullett User
Guide (a necessary tool for
people venturing into 5,200
acres of swamp, marsh and
woodlands), dyke maintenance,
water flow (flooding and
drainage measures), as well as
other projects. Without the
assistance of the FOH and its
volunteers many of these
opportunities and
responsibilities would be almost
impossible to realize.
In spring 2004, the new
Hullett Interpretive Centre
opened and admission is
currently free of charge to the
public, youth and school groups.
The centre boasts several
mounted marsh 'birds and
animals exhibited in settings
true to their natural
environment, a classroom area
with A/V equipment available
for use and there are self -guided
activity areas throughout.
In the spring and fall of each
year the marsh plays host to dog
trials for both pointers and
retrievers; drawing in
participants from across Canada
and the USA (an economic
boon to the Huron County
economy).
Along with this, Hullett raises
upwards of 1,700 pheasants
each year for clow release into
the marsh for an Annual
Pheasant Challenge, which also
draws participants
internationally.
This year marks the fourth
Annual Challenge and is
currently under way in
concurrence with pheasant
hunting season (Sept. 25 to Dec.
This August, the Hullett Marsh received photographic proof of
a Peregrine Falcon - classified as a threaten species - roosting
inside the marsh.
15). Since hunting
is not permitted on Sunday, this
is the recommended day for
hikers during the fall season
albeit they are still advised to
wear bright clothing.
To participate in the Pheasant
Challenge, hunters must
purchase a $10 ticket from the
Hullett Marsh Office, Huron
Sports Outfitters (Kippen) or
Ontario Gun Services (Clinton).
If they harvest a pheasant that
is banded, the band is brought
into the office and the hunter is
awarded a corresponding prize
(donations of items made by
local, supporting businesses).
These contributors are
gratefully recognized each year
in the Annual User Guide
(which is funded by the
advertisers who place ads
within). The pheasant
challenge is an excellent,
controlled event that provides
hunters with the opportunity of
harvesting dinner through sport
rather than simply purchasing it
from the grocery store freezer;
the fun is in matching skill
against nature whereby, if the
hunter's skill is wanting then the
bird freely evades him.
Many of the pheasants that
are released never get harvested
and some survive winter,
returning to visit the pheasant
runs filled with new chicks in
the spring.
The remainder serve as food
for various marsh predators to
assist in balancing the contained
marsh eco -system.
As 2004 began, Hullett could
boast over 250 bird species
present in the marsh at various
times of the year.
This is due to the fact that
Hullett is situated in the path of
two migrational flyways.
When Osprey were sighted last
fall the FOH immediately
undertook to erect three Osprey
Platforms in the hopes of
attracting them as regular guests
(perhaps even inspiring them to
call it home).
Then, in August of this year,
Hullett was excited to receive
photographic proof of a
Peregrine Falcon (classified as a
threatened species) roosting
inside the marsh.
In 2000, an estimated 500
pairs of Peregrine Falcon
anatum subspecies nested in all
of Canada.
In addition to this, Hullett
Marsh became the cover story
for Ontario Out -of -Doors
Magazine's August 2004
edition.
It was Part One of three cover
stories articling Ontario's
Waterfowling Traditions.
"As a waterfowl staging area
during migration," writes Steve
Cooke, "Hullett Provincial
Wildlife Area is considered to
be nationally significant ..."
And the fun never stops.
Along with the fourth Annual
Pheasant Challenge and the
release of the new 2004 / 2005
User Guide, Hullett Marsh
offers a new way for members
of its community to get
involved.
For the first time ever, they
are launching a Farewell to
Summer Raffle with tickets
available through various
sponsoring retailers.
First prize for the draw, to
take place Dec. 15, is a
Caribbean Cruise for two kindly
donated by West York Chev
Olds in Toronto.
With only 200 tickets being
sold at $20 each, they are sure to
gd quickly.
You can get yours at any of
the following locations:
Scrimgeour's Market in Blyth,
Mac's Convenience Store in
Clinton, Kate's Station (at Hwy.
4 and Vanastra Rd., Clinton),
and at Janet's Country Donut
Cafe in Seaforth.
The Hullett Provincial
Wildlife Area has come a long
way in 25 years and the future
looks bright for the next 25.
