Seaforth woman hoped voting Democrat
would shorten son's tour of duty in Iraq
By Susan Hund.rtmark

While Pat Rodney, of
Seaforth, knew voting for
U.S. Presidential candidate
John Kerry wouldn't stop
her son Justin from being
sent to Iraq
this January
with the U.S.
military, she
hoped it would
at least reduce
his time over
there.
Pat, who has
d u a 1
citizenship in
the U.S. and
Canada, voted
for Kerry in
last week's
U.S. election and says she's
frustrated by U.S. President
George W. Bush's win for a
second term.
"I think Kerry seemed to
be the better man. I do not
like Bush. I don't not think
he's a very intelligent man
and I think he has his own
agenda," she says.
"I seem to be batting
zero. I voted for Al Gore in
the last election."
Justin, the son of Pat and
Dr. Ken Rodney, is in his
second week of training for
a one-year mission in Iraq
as a transport helicopter
pilot and is expected to go
to a base south of Baghdad
in January.
"We're just sitting here
trying to get on with our
lives and I think Justin does
not want to alarm us - he
keeps very casual about it,"
she says.
broader picture," she says.
Maureen Spittal, whose
son-in-law Dr. Matt Brown,
served two tours of duty in
Iraq as a surgeon with a
medical unit with the U.S.
Army, says she was sorry to
see Kerry lose the U.S.
election.
"But, I
would have
hated to see
Kerry have
to clean up
George's
mess - let
him deal
with that,"
says Spittal.
Brown,

returned
home from
Iraq last November from
his second tour of duty, was
honourably discharged from
the U.S. Army last Easter.
Seaforth-area businesses
who depend on the U.S.
market for their success
were more concerned with
the strength of the U.S.
dollar than with the winner
of the recent election.
"I don't follow politics
that closely but the U.S.
dollar affects us. A strong
U.S. economy is our
preference," says Luke
Janmaat, owner of
Progressive Turf in
Seaforth.
Janmaat says his
lawnmower factory does 80
per cent of its business in
the United States.
Charlie Smith, owner of
Boilersmith in Seaforth,
agreed that a high Canadian
dollar does not help any
Canadian manufacturer that
exports to the U.S.
"Whether the U.S.
election causes the U.S.
dollar to go up, we don't
know yet. But, they've got
a very weak dollar because
they've been spending a lot
of money building $2
million bombs," says
Smith.
Because the election was
so close, Smith says Canada
could benefit from the fact
that some Americans have
said they might leave their
homeland and move to
Canada because of Bush's
win.
"If we could convince
more doctors and nursies to
move back and help our

"We're trying to think as
positively as the boys and
girls in the U.S. military
are," she says.
Because the election was
so close, Pat is hoping the
rest of the world realizes
that the United States is
divided in its support of
Bush and is frustrated that
Bush seems to think he's
bean given a mandate to
continue the war in Iraq.
"A lot of people feel
Americans are stupid for
voting for Bush - that's the
feeling I get from a lot of
Canadians. The American
people are very insular - I
can say that because I am
an American. But, I think

health care system, that
would be a good thing," he
says.
Carolanne Doig, owner of
Successables Rain Gear,
says she is also hoping the
recent U.S. election will
improve the U.S. dollar.
"The high Canadian
dollar is great for travellers
but it's hard for those who
export to the U.S. I wasn't
sure if it might be better to
have the devil you know (in
power)," she says, adding
she also does 80 per cent of
her business in the United
States.
