Huron -Bruce. MP expects Truscott
decision will be made this week
By Matt Shurrie
Goderich Signal -Star Editor
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle is confident a
decision regarding the fate of
former Clinton resident
Steven Truscott will be
announced this week.
Steckle made the
comments amidst intense
media speculation that an
announcement from Justice
Minister Irwin Colter could
come as soon as tomorrow
(Oct. 28).
"I think it's fair to say the
minister is committed to
making an announcement this
week," Steckle said on
Monday from his office in
Ottawa. "I know he's
committed to that - he's
assured me of that."
While he remained
confident a decision was
forthcoming, Steckle said
nothing had been scheduled
at the moment. However, that
could change within 12-24

hours notice.
"It's a miscarriage of
justice to a degree that we
haven't seen in the history of
this country. It certainly has
to happen - it's long
overdue," Steckle said.
"Again we find ourselves
waiting with bated breath and
we're hoping the right kind
of announcement will be
made."
Truscott, now 59, was 14
when he was condemned to
hang for the strangling death
of his 12 -year-old schoolmate
Lynne Harper. He faced two
execution dates before his
yentence was commuted to
life in prison.
During his 10 years in
prison, Truscott appealed all
the way to the Supreme
Court. He was eventually
paroled in 1969.
After his release, Truscott
married and had three
children but lived
anonymously for years. He
finally stepped forward in
2000 to begin a campaign to
clear his name.
Truscott and James
Lockyer, one of the lawyers
representing Truscott through
the Association in Defence of
the Wrongly Convicted,
made a rare public
appearance together last
Friday speaking on a panel at
a conference on the
wrongfully convicted before
a group of Windsor law
students.
Lockyer told the
conference that he hopes
Cotler will order a new trial.
"Only then will Steven
have the chance to rid
himself - we hope - of
demons that must have lived
with him for now 45 years
and three weeks," Lockyer
said.
Now a grandfather living
in Guelph, Truscott has
always maintained he is an
innocent man who was
convicted on the basis of
circumstantial evidence.
After reviewing an 18-
month inquiry into Truscott's
conviction, Cotler can either
send the case back to a court
of appeal or order a new trial.
Declaring a new trial
would effectively overturn
the prior conviction.
Steckle hinted that he
would be unhappy with any
announcement that falls short
of granting a new trial.
"I have been very vocal
with the minister and done
everything within my power
(to get a positive decision),"
Steckle said. "I've probably
even crossed the line at
times. "I wish the outcome
to be the right one - it had
better be the right one."
Steven and . Marlene
Truscott have repeatedly said
they are not speaking to the
media until the minister's
decision is announced.
