Flu shot clinics being held this year at Seaforth Legion, local schools By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff Starting this week, the Huron County Health Unit will be offering free flu shots at school and community-based clinics across the county. The school-based clinics make it easier for parents to ensure that their children get the flu shot; parents don't have to take a day off work to take their children out of school for a trip to the doctor's office. For those families without a family physician, school-based clinics are a safe, simple alternative. The health unit strongly recommends the flu shot for people over six months of age every year. It's important to get the flu shot every year," said Huron County Health Unit senior public health promoter Linda Stobo. In Seaforth, school-based clinics will be held on the morning of Nov. 17 at St. James and all -day on Nov. 23 at Seaforth Public School "The idea of the school based flu clinic is to give the students and their teachers an opportunity to get the flu shot," said Stobo. "The flu virus spreads very easily in the school environment," says Dr. Beth Henning, Medical Officer of Health. "Every year healthy, school -aged children suffer significant flu -related illness." According to the health unit, the flu shot can prevent flu -related illness and has also been shown to reduce severe ear infections in young children by up to 36 per cent. The flu hit children particularly hard in the 2003/04 season. The A/Fujian flu circulated last year, causing serious illness and many more ddaths than usual in Ontario and elsewhere in North America. According to Stobo, all indications are that the A/Fujian strain will circulate again this year. Although the vaccine offered some protection last year, this year's flu vaccine is expected to be more effective as it is well - matched with A/Fujian. The vaccine will also provide protection against the New Caledonia, B/Shanghai strains. A flu vaccination is normally 70 to 90 per cent effective in preventing the flu in healthy adults and about 70 per cent effective in preventing flu with fever in children. Last year through public flu -shot clinics, the Huron County Health Unit inoculated 8,497 people. Last year, the Seaforth Community Hospital hosted four flu -shot clinics but will not be holding any this year. "This year the Seaforth Community Hospital declined from offering any community clinics," said Stobo, who explained that people will still have a chance to get a flu shot. "I believe there are lots of opportunities for individuals to get their flu shots. Look at lists across the county," said Stobo. Residents can still get their flu shot from their doctor at the Seaforth Medical Clinic or at one of two clinics being held at the Legion on Nov. 4 and 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. Influenza, commonly called the 'flu', is a highly contagious viral infection that causes sudden fever, sore throat, dry cough, headache, muscle aches and fatigue.
