Huron Hurricanes attend
first swim meed of season
Huron Hurricanes attended
their first swim meet of the
short course season hosted by
the Norfolk Hammerhead
Aquatic Club at Simcoe on
Oct. 9.
Nine swimmers from the
Hurricanes competed in 18
different events..
Goderich swimmer Amy
Bicknell, competing in the
novice group and Rebecca
Melady from Clinton,
competing in the senior
category were named
swimmers of the meet.
Many of the swimmers
posted personal best times
and'were recognized with
ribbons for their efforts.
In the 7 -8 -year-old girls'
25- metre backstroke, Kayla
Pettapiece, of Zurich, took 11
seconds off her seed time to
end with a personal best time
of 29.93.
Rachel Vannesste, took off
seven seconds finishing in
39.58 seconds.
In the 7-8 girls' 25 -metre
breastroke, Pettapiece
finished with a personal best
time of 45.13 and Vanneste
cut more than a second off
her seed time to finish with a
56.15.
In the 7-8 girls' 25 -metre
butterfly, Vanneste finished
with a 58.38 and Pettapiece
finished in 51.23.
In the 25 -metre freestyle,
Pettapiece fished seond in her
heat cutting five seconds off
her seed time to finish with a
28.18 and Vanneste cut five
seconds off her time and
finished in 42.07 seconds.
In the 11 and 12 -year-old
girls' 25 -metre backstroke,
Amy Bicknell of Goderich,
finished first in her heat with
a personal best time of 25.59.
In the 25 -metre
breaststroke for girls 11 and
12, Bicknell finished with a

Bicknell posted another
personal best time of 31.21
and in the 25 -metre freestyle,
she finished first in her heat
with a personal best time of
22.98.
In the afternoon, the
swimmers competed in the
50, 100 and 200 metre swims.
Nathanya Barnett, of
Goderich, led off the
competitionin the girls' 9 -10 -
year -old 50 -metre freestyle,
finishing with a 52.81.
In the 50 -metre butterfly,
Barnett had a strong swim
finishing with a time of
1:10.27 and in the 50 -metre
breaststroke, she finished first
in her heat with a 1:15.31.
Barnett swam the 50 -metre
backstroke in a time of
1:07.42.
In the women's 15 and
over 50 -metre freestyle,
Aiden Barnett of Goderich
finished with a time of 32.42
and Rebecca Melady, of
Clinton, finished with a time
of 32.62 placing first and
second respectively in their
race.
Christy Hartmann of
Hensall finished with a time
of 34.20.
In the 50 -metre butterfly,
Melady finished with a
personal best time of 37.13,
tying for first place with
Barnett followed closely by
Seaforth Optimist Club

Hartmann who finished with
a 40.28.
In the 50 -metre
breaststroke for women 15
and over, Melady finished
first in the heat with a
personal best time of 43.88.
Hartmann finished second
with a 46.92 followed by
Barnett who posted a time of
49.91.
In the 50 -metre backstroke
Melady swam a personal best
time of 38.74 to finish first.
Barnett posted a time of
41.56 followed closely by
Hartmann who finished with
a time of 43.15.
Hartmann had a strong
swim in the 100 -metre
freestyle and finished with a
time of 1:17.77.
The last swim of the day
was the 200 -metre individual
medley, an event which
combines the four strokes of
butterfly, backstroke,
breaststroke, freestyle.
Barnett finished first with a
time of 2:57. 91 and Melady
posted a personal best time of
3:01.29.
On Sunday, Oct. 24, at the
Maitland Recreation Centre
in Goderich, the Hurricanes
Aquatic Club will host their
own swim meet attended by
the Norfolk Hammerheads
and the Port Elgin Swim
Team.
