The special guest speaker for the ceremony, National Hockey League linesman Scott Driscoll, is a graduate of the former Seaforth and District High School. CHSS teacher Linda Doig, who once taught keyboarding to Driscoll, introduced him and joked that it is thanks to the NHL lockout that he was able to attend the event. Doig fondly recalled Driscoll as a student who was blessed with a sense of humour and who was known among peers as a mediator. Driscoll proved Doig's memory accurate as he started off his address by sharing an anecdote that took a crack at the Toronto Maple Leafs. "Don't be ashamed. Raise your hand if you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan," he quipped before launching into a story about a dog who went wild whenever the Leafs scored, but never had the chance to see the team win a game. The dog's owner, when explaining the situation to the bar owner at the joke's end, explains, "I've only had him for five years." Driscoll also took time out to give credit to former teachers for successes in life as well as the influence of Joyce McClure who first urged him to sign up for a level one referee clinic when he was a 13 -year-old teenager that spent a lot of his free time at the Seaforth arena. Since his first love was hockey, Driscoll jumped at the chance and said the best thing was he was getting paid to do something he loved. His first dream was to be a NHL hockey star but after spending a few years with the St. Marys' Lincolns Junior B team, he realized it was not to be. But, he continued to work as a referee and he also attended the Ontario Hockey Association's referee school where he was scouted by a NHL official. After earning a degree at Wilfrid Laurier University, Driscoll earned his teaching accreditation at University of Western Ontario and upon graduation, he was given the opportunity to be a linesman for the NHL. "It sure sounded appealing to be out on the ice with the best hockey players in the world," he says. Driscoll told students the keys to success are dedication, commitment, learning from mistakes, and always keeping one's options Scott Driscoll open. "For me, it was working a game whenever I was given the opportunity," he says, adding he was the top all round male athlete at Laurier when he graduated even though his work schedule meant he was travelling to a number of locales. including Sault Ste. Marie and Detroit even when he had classes the next day. (His wife earned the top female athlete honour at Laurier that same year.) His career as a linesman has been a labour of love. He said the main drawback of the job is spending many days on the road, but he credited his wife and family for being supportive. He said patience and perseverance are important keys to success in any career as is confidence. "There is a very fine line between confidence and cockiness," he cautioned, adding it is important to learn from those in one's circle. Driscoll said if a career in refereeing had not come to fruition, he nonetheless had a career in teaching to fall hack on. "You must he well-rounded and keep your options open." he said. He cited refereeing the 2004 All Star Game in Minnesota and the 2004 Stanley Cup finals as being among his career highlights. "If you find something you love to do, you will never work a day in your life," he said.
