Steckle confident new
trial to be announced
for Truscott this week
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News -Record Editor
The 45 -year wait is nearly over.
Steven Truscott, who has
long been seeking
exoneration for his 1959
murder conviction of 12 -
year -old Lynne Harper, is
expected to learn this week
whether Justice Minister
Irwin Cotler will order a
new trial, which is what
Truscott and his legal team,
including famed defence
lawyer James Lockyer, have
been seeking for years.
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle says the decision
has been a long time in
coming and that he has been
following the appeal
process since entering
federal politics more than a
decade ago.
Indeed, Steckle presented
Cotler with the pro-Truscott book, Until
You Are Dead by Julian Sher, when the MP
took over the justice portfolio.
"The intention is to break the news this
week, likely earlier in the week," says
Steckle. "The view is we are all hoping for
a very positive outcome of this."
Steckle says though he cannot reveal the
contents of his discussion with Cotler, the
Huron -Bruce MP is confident Truscott will
be vindicated in whatever
route Cotler chooses to go.
"This is the case of the
worse miscarriage of justice
in Canadian history," says
Steckle.
Steckle, who has been in
weekly contact with the
Justice Minister, says Cotler
has done a great deal of
work on the Truscott
application.
"We certainly hope this
will be a successful
outcome," says Steckle. "1
am confident it will be."
If a new trial is ordered,
Steckle is confident the
judge will quickly see that
there is no evidence linking
Truscott to Harper's death.
Truscott supporters have
been awaiting word from the Justice
Minister since the application was handed
over to his office in May.
Steven and Marlene Truscott are not
speaking to the media until the minister's
decision is announced.
