The Huron United Way raises funds annually to support 13 member agencies. Need greater than ever for United Way By Matt Shurrie Goderich Signal -Star Staff Change has come to the Huron United Way. Gone is the organization s traditional red and white logo - replaced this year with a blue and white brochure - and the organization has found a new home base in Goderich on Elgin Street. Kim Payne has also returned for a second chance to serve as executive director. However, one thing that hasn t changed is the need for donations as the United Way looks to top the $200,000 fundraising mark. The agencies are fundraising their butts off to survive right now and there s so much competition for their dollar especially in this part of the county right now. Payne said. Its very, very tough for the agencies so we really nod to help people understand that (United Way) is not just a logo but it s actually real people in the county. The Huron United Way actively supports 13 member agencies including Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Huron. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Huron, Huron Safc Homes for Youth, Epilepsy Ontario (Huron -Perth - Bruce) and Huron Hospice Volunteer Service. Also receiving support is V.O.N. Perth -Huron Branch (Palliative Care Volunteer Program), North Huron Special Transit Corporation (Wheels Away). Wingham and District Community Living Association, Midwestern Adult Day Services, Family Services - Perth -Huron (credit counselling program), Huron County Child Abuse Prevention Committee and Women s Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. The collection of volunteers in turn provide services for up to 20,000 residents. Unfortunately, that level of support does not always receive the kind of financial help it deserves. We know that people are being touched and lives are being changed because of the work those organizations do, Payne said. We re helping them do their jobs. So when an agency that has come to depend on a certain amount doesn t get that they have to cut back somewhere and usually it s staff which means a program gets cut. It means somebody s not being served. Payne, who served as the Huron United Way s executive director from 1997-2000, spent the last four years working in Chatham -Kent helping operate a food bank, organizing a transportation service and taking part in plenty of committee work. 1 was a funded agency when 1 was in Chatham -Kent so I can tell the story both from being a funded agency now that I ve been a recipient of the funds, Payne said. It s given me a brand new focus to really go out there and work hard. Payne said this year s campaign has already achieved 20 per cent of the target but stressed the need for businesses and employees to take part in payroll deduction to secure long-term funding. If you do payroll deduction you re supporting 13 funded agencies and at $10 a week that puts you irfb leadership level which is $520 per year, Payne said. After taxes you re really only donating $300 and most of us can do that. Using the example of Wingham, Payne said financial stability is quite simple using payroll deduction when you consider that 1,500 of a possible 2,900 population could provide as much as $780,000 annually if they gave $10 per week. Every time I do the numbers I say they can t be right, Payne . said. Its not asking 100 people to give a lot of money - it s asking a lot of people to give a little bit of money. Also new to this year s campaign is the implementation of community leaders serving as fundraising campaign chairs. In the past the Huron United Way has selected one person to oversee the entire county. Scotiabank manager Doran Love, best-known for his role as chair of the highly successful Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life, is this year s Goderich chair. The fact that (the United Way) helps so many organizations is a big thing, Love said. I sit on the women s shelter board and that s where I first saw the impact of the United Way when I sat in on the allocation interview and I had to sell our case why we needed the money. I guess! was ignorant about the whole thing but 1 didn t know what the United Way was until about three or four years ago. Now I know that it helps so many organizations and it s the big reason I got on board Love and Payne have Personally challenged Goderich residents to read the United Ways brochure when it arrives at their door and ask themselves if they have been personally touched by any, one of the member agencies. You can t tell me that nobody you know ever yourself - hasn t been touched by one of those organizations, Payne said. That s the challenge -- pick it up and bolt at it and put yauself under the knse. For more information about the Huron United Way contact Payne at 524-7900 or e-mail humnunitedway@tcc.on.ca. Huron County roads receiving a failing grade from online poll By Carissa Pertschy Signal -Star Staff Huron County may not have the worst roads in Ontario, but some roads are receiving a failing grade. The second annual poll ranking the worst roads for 2004 online at www.worstroads.ca provides an outlet for motorists to nominate roads they feel are among the worst in Ontario. What s not a problem? one critic said of the stretch of Highway 21 between Kincardine and Forest. It s covered with potholes, poor repairs, patch work pavement, a rough ride, rippled pavement and cracks to boot. This tourist route needs a fixin (and) needs lane expansion due to heavy traffic. The online poll opened at the end of August and eight unfavourable nods have been recorded for Huron County. Nominations close Nov. 14. Provincial highways in this arca arc in worse shape than our county roads, one complaint ,said of the section of highway 8 connecting Clinton and Goderich. Also making the worst road list in Huron County are Algonquin Drive in Huron Park, Ashfield Division Line between Belgrave Road and Glenshill Road, county roads in northern Huron County and Confederation Street between Highway 40 and Indian Road. County of Huron engineer Don Pletch told the Signal - Star most county roads are in pretty decent shape. ' Pletch attributed the deterioration of roads to be similar to rust on a vehicle you don t notice it at first, but in 10 years you really notice. County roads in northern Huron County were described as having potholes, garbage, dead animals on them. In winter, just use township side roads, they 11 be better maintained. Pletch said asphalt needs to be replaced every 20 years similar to a roof. Huron County is ranked 61st in terms of municipalities receiving the most number of votes trailing way behind the major violator greater Sudbury who has 1,222. Partners in the Municipal Roads Coalition behind www.worstroads.ca are CAA Ontario, Ontario Motor Coach Association, Ontario Trucking Association, Ontario Road Builders Association, Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
