News THE HURON EX‘OSITOR, Oct. 6, 2004-13 400 participate in Huron farm hike By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff Exploring agricultural operations ranging from a rutabaga plant in Blyth, to a dairy producer near Walton and a horse ranch near Belgrave, close to 400 people took part in this year's Huron County Farm Hiker Tour. The event, which took place on Sunday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m., featured some farms from areas near Walton, Brussels and Grey, as well as other parts of the county. "The basis behind the Huron County Farm Hiker Tour is an educational tour for people who don't get to be on farms on a regular basis," said Dorothy Cummings co-chair of the Huron County Farm Hiker Tour. The tour featured nine stops including a dairy farm, rutabaga processing plant, an apple and pear orchard, sheep farm, two cash crop farm, a ranch, beef cattle operation and rural clothing store. "They can see how 'farm to table' farm products are produced and it gives us an opportunity to showcase Huron County agriculture at its best," said Cummings. Walton -area dairy farmer Jim Blake said that farm tours are a great idea because it lets people see what's going on in your operation. "I think it's important to let the public know (what you're doing) and invite them in to your place. We're not hiding anything," said Blake. Blake's daughter, Lisa Stevenson, said that she had some people ask basic questions like where the cows are milked, how they are fed and where the milk goes. • "They're just basic questions that I'm surprised of because people don't know it," said Stevenson. "So, I guess that's why they come on these tours to learn a little bit." Blake explained that he enjoyed some of the questions because he knew the people were interested in the farm. "I'm always impressed with people that ask those questions because they're thinking," said Blake. "Like if I go someplace, I kind of look and when 1 come home 1 think 'oh I should have asked that.— Lori Pipe, of Brussels, said that this was the first year her family had participated in the farm tour and they were surprised with what they learned. "I think it's a great service. People should should take advantage of it," said Pipe. Both Pipe and her husband grew up on a farm, but she said that living in town her children do not know as much about farming. Pipe said that by going on this tour her children "are just getting exposure they wouldn't get in town." Beef cattle farmer Dave Wheeler said the tour was an opportunity for people to see a cattle operation. "There's a lot of people that just haven't seen a lot of cow calf operations," said Wheeler. Although hecf farmers have been going through a tough time with the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) "I'm not here today to just get out to Jason Middleton photo Walton -area dairy farmer Jim Blake shows a piece of equipment during the Huron County Farm Hiker Tour. tell everyone about our problems with BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) because most people in the rural area know that we're still in trouble," said Pipe. The type of people that come out to these are curious to what's going on in the farm," said cash crop producer Mervyn Bauer. "This gives them an opportunity to get out on the farm and see for themselves." "The urban people get to see what the country's all about," said Bauer. until REMOVAL , removal & dean -up t truck service chipping p Grinding n Rolling Bamard • 819.482.3976 SCHOONDERWOERD BROS.
