started raising a stink about
it.
Roney, who tapped about
5,000 trees last year, said the
property assessment change
earlier this year was just a
cash grab.
We knew the government
was trying to tax us more,
said Roney. It was just a
typical money grab from the
government. That s all it
was, said Roney.
Winthrop maple syrup
producer Barb Storey said
that either way the
government s decision does
not affect her farm.
We ve always paid a
commercial tax here, said
Storey. The tax they were
going to put on the syrup
producers really isn t going
to change our taxes because
we already pay a tax to
produce syrup here.
By already being
classified commercial (or
industrial), the Storey s can
sell their pork products,
honey and maple syrup.
I don t know if it was fair
or not but it was maybe our
turn, Storey said about the
reclassification.
Last Tuesday, the Ontario
government announced that
they are lowering property
taxes for some maple syrup
producers by reversing the
industrial property tax
classifications.
In a press release, Finance
Minister Greg Sorbara said
that they decided to look at
changing the property tax
classification after hearing
maple syrup producers
concerns.
We listened and are
taking action to address the
concerns of maple syrup
producers, said Sorbara.
The government is
committed to finding ways
to improve the quality and
consistency of property
assessments in Ontario.
As of Jan. 1, 2004, maple
syrup producers will be
taxed at the a lower farm
rate for property tax
purposes.
Ontario produces up to 10
per cent of Canada s maple
syrup with about 2,600
producers in the province.
This decision reverses a
plan by the Municipal
Property Assessment
Corporation (MPAC) which
applied an industrial
property tax classification
which affected some maple
syrup producers for the 2004
tax year.
To distinguish between
farts property and industrial
property classifications,
MPAC considers the
primary agricultural product
and the process involved in
getting that commodity to
market.
The government values
the Ontario farming
community for both the high
quality of products it
produces and for its
contribution to the overall
health and prosperity of the
people of this province,
said Agriculture and Food
Minister Steve Peters, in a
press release.
Bill Mailloux, vice-
president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture
(OFA), said this is welcome
news for Ontario farmers.
Finance Minister
Sorbara s announcement
tells us that the provincial
government recognizes there
arc problems with the way
farming is defined for
property tax assessment
purposes, said Mailloux.
We hope the minister
will now turn his attention
to extending this reversal to
other farmers in Ontario by
accepting a proposed
definition of farming for
assessment purposes.
The OFA hopes that the
reclassification goes beyond
ntaplc syrup. Thcy said that
hatcheries, fruit and
vegetable production
facilities and apple storage
operations are some other
farm related industries that
