' and for OPEN SAT. 15 UIMINAT News Councillors prepare to defend amalgamation to Grey ratepayers From Pogo 1 responded Knight. And, when Beaven pointed out that Grey is earning Huron East the most in Community Reinvestment Funding (CRF) from the province at $735,000 a year, Knight said that amount might not be guaranteed to Grey if it were not amalgamated with Huron East. I am not for an instant promoting de -amalgamation but I want the facts to show we are better off staying part of Huron East, said Beaven. He pointed out that according to the budget figures and levels of taxation, Grey residents should have more animosity towards Brussels than Seaforth since Brussels has gone from eighth highest taxes in Huron County in 2000 to fourth lowest taxes in 2004. Going by that, Brussels is king. They ve benefitted the most from amalgamation, he said. Seaforth in comparison was second highest in taxes in the county in 2000 and is now fifth highest, while McKillop, Tuckersmith, Grey and Brussels have the four lowest taxation rates in Huron. Brussels Coun. David Blaney said he wanted administration to be able to answer detailed questions about road construction and services at the Sept. 28 meeting. You re going to get pointed questions and want to he able to answer them, he said. Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan agreed saying ratepayers are going to want to know how much is being spent on office help and on road graders and trucks, before and since amalgamation. They have to know we re not flying by the seat of our pants and that we have a firm five-year plan. That s an important point to he made, that we re not going out buying road graders and trucks because we want to, he said. We will. prepare you as much as possible. We want the councillors to he the ones answering the questions, responded Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan. Mayor Joe Seili added that the only part of the budget that council has been able to control since amalgamation has been councillors per diems, the number of council meetings and some administrative cots. The rest we ve had no control over, he said. Beaven warned that the Tuckersmith Day Nursery will be a hot potato for Grey residents. Vanastrit s daycare has been an issue in Grey since Day One. It is still a service that isn t being offered in the rest of the municipality and that seems unfair to the north, he said. Vanastra doesn t have an arena - do we open one down there'? responded Blaney, adding that services vary throughout the municipality. Knight argued that because the daycare s deficit has been reduced to $40,000 and because it pays the municipality $34,000 in rent each year, it could be said that the daycare s annual deficit is only $6,000. I think things have started to turn around significantly there, agreed Seili. And, Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath pointed out that council s scrutiny of the daycare resulted in a reduced deficit. Before this was brought up, this budget was just rubber stamped every year, : he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan argued that closing the daycare centre will place a $34,000 strain on the Vanastra Recreation Centre s budget. The major problem is that s a partial building we re not able to rent out to anyone else, he said. Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler agreed saying that closing the daycare would end up putting the rec centre out of business. The daycare closing puts the rec centre on a slippery slope and I see another empty building in Vanastra in two or three years. I think we re spinning our wheels for $6,000, he said. Knight said he believed the second part of Pandora s box for Grey residents is capital funding for recreation. We had to put money into the Seaforth arena to bring it up to standard but once it s up to standard, we need to come with an acceptable levy to ruts it, he said. Steve didn t bat an eye. He went to bat for us with the United Church because first we wanted to get married in his church. But, after waiting for a year, we told him we were going to go ahead and make other plans, says Chance. We couidn t blame them (the congregation) because we d never gone to their church, she adds. But, Hildebrand told them he d marry them wherever they wanted and they continued with plans at Arden Park, a hotel in Stratford. While they were initially worried about some negative reaction to their wedding, both say they received only loving support. People were so happy for us, so glad it was legal so that we could get married, says Natalie. There was a lot of love in that room, agrees Chance. Thumbing through their wedding album, the two are happy to reminisce about their big day and the special touches they made. For instance, Natalie decided to honour Chance s mom, who died three years ago, by baking 200 miniature pies for all the guests. The pic box said Thelma s famous pies and had our names and the date on the side, says Natalie. They also hired a second photographer to take pictures of all the guests to include in the keepsake guest book. It was all just as weddingy, as weddingy could be, says Natalie. While they are one of close to 4,000 same-sex couples to be married since the option became legal, Natalie points out that few of those unions were a rush to the altar. What you don t know is they ve been together for maybe 25 years and are finally able to get married, she says. Our wedding wasn t better than anyone else s but everyone was so happy because the world said, yes, you two can be married. This was a long path for us.
