Joint project between SPS and library levels books
Reading list developed to help parents and students access books at a child's individual reading level
level is to reduce the
child's frustration when he
or she is reading to you,"
she says.
"When a child hates to
read, nine out of 10 times
it's because he's reading a
book that's way too hard
for him."
Teachers begin
determining a student's
reading level in the
primary grades through a
speical marking system
that involves listening to
the child read, analysing
errors and asking
comprehension questions.
"Every parent can ask
what level a child is at and
be able to individualize
their instruction," she
says.
While the project was
completed' in Scaforth,
Sage shared the list with
libraries throughout Huron
County so leveled hooks
are available throughout
the whole system.
"You literally can have
your child read all the
books listed in the level
just by ordering them,"
says Black.

A joint project of the
Seaforth Public Library
and Seaforth Public School
will make more books
available to students at
their individual reading
levels.
"It's a huge boost to
literacy for the whole
community," says Seaforth
Public School principal
Kim Black.
Black approached
Seaforth librarian Rebecca
Dechert Sage last spring
with a request to develop a
list of leveled books
offered throughout the
Huron County library
system to help parents find
appropriate reading
material over the summer.
Because the request fell
within the library's
mission statement "to meet
the informational,
educational and
recreational needs of the
residents of Huron
County," Sage agreed and
compiled a list of 715
children's books, using a
resource book from the

Kindergarten to Grade 6,

educators Irene Fountas
and Gay Su Pinnell.
While leveled hooks are
available in the classroom
during the school year,
Black says the classroom
sets were too expensive to
allow them to go home
over the summer when
parents requested them.
"We wanted to keep
those books for circulation
within the school building
but we knew we had to do
something to help
parents," she says.
Black got the idea to ask
the Seaforth Library to
level their hooks so that
parents could continue to
help their children
progress with their reading
skills over the summer.
At the same time, she
decided to launch a similar
project at the school
library, where student and
parent volunteers are still
working at leveling the
hooks.
Black says before the
leveling project, parents
were left to wonder if any
hook they picked up at the
library would be suitable
for their child's reading
level.
"There is nothing better
for a child than to be
successful with a book. To
know your child's reading
