Participation on the rise in summer
minor sports programs in Seaforth
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
This summer saw more
children participating in
summer sports than last
year and the interest seems
to be growing.
Both minor soccer and
baseball are saying that this
was a huge summer for
minor sports in Seaforth,
According to minor
soccer organizer Sandra
Melady, there were 12
house league teams and
four travel teams.
More than 200 children
took part in soccer this
summer which is up from
last year.
Melady said she hopes
for more local interest in
soccer. "I think it's coming,
but it will take time."
She said she'd like to see
the number of travel teams
go up.
"1 think I'd like to get
more interest with the
travel (teams) because I
think more kids want more
of a challenge," said
Melady. "House league is
fun but it's nice to have a
little more competition."
"It's good to see more
kids get involved with the
travel to make it more
challenging," said Melady.
Pete Rowntree said that
this year was a good year
for Seaforth baseball.
He said that three teams
won an A Championship
during this year's season
with a possibility of the
batams also winning in the
next few weeks.
This year was also a
milestone for minor
baseball in town as there
was an all -girls squirt team.
"It was a challenge for
them, in that a lot of the
team players to make a
girls squirt team, were
brought up from mites,"
said Rowntree. "They had a
challenging year."
"Hopefully next year, if
they stay together, they'll
have a lot better shot at
things," said Rowntree.

Coaches' comment:
St.Columban is fighting to stay
up in first division next year by
avoiding finishing in the bottom
two places while Simcoe is
fighting for first place in the
division with the premiership in
the their sights.
Despite being emotionally
down to start the second half,
St.Columban came out hard and
dominated most of the play.
An excellent effort was put
forth by all but especially
defenders Steve Ryan, Terry
Sloan and Jeff Murray, who
helped St.Columban earn the
point by shutting Simcoe's potent
offence down in the second half.
St,Columban's next and final
home game will be Sunday, Sept.
19th at 4 p.m. at St.Columban
field against Wallaceburg.

Rowntree said that in the
past a lot of Seaforth teams
had become A or B
champs.
"I really admire all the
coaches. They did a great
job with the kids," said
Rowntree.
Next year, both
Seaforth's minor haseball
and minor soccer groups
are considering a move that
would create an executive
for each of their
organizations.
"1 think next year with
the new soccer committee
set up, it will be run a little
smoother and will
hopefully make a
difference with the
season," said Melady.
Your

"We want to become
more organized. Get a true
executive, get & president,
vice-president, treasurer
and that kind of thing,"
said Rowntree.
He said this year that
minor baseball organizers
ran into a problem when
more kids signed up for the
sport this spring and they
ran out of uniforms.
Rowntree hopes that an
executive will help
eliminate that problem
from happening in the
future.
This year more than 200
kids played on nine
haseball teams ranging
from junior mite to bantam
which is up from last year.
"We have doubled up in
the number of kids out,"
said Rowntree.
