Dungannon -area feedlot
operator George Alton was
also sceptical about the new
funding given the federal
government's recent track
record.
"What good is another
announcement when they
haven't finished the first
announcement?" Alton
asked.
Alton, who currently has
about 1,200
head of cattle
on his farm,
said what the
federal
government
should do is
ban the import
of offshore
beef
something That
has been
creating
problems for
Canadian beef
producers.
"Last year
we took in
taking the place of about
20,000 Canadian cattle.
"What we are seeking to do
with today's announcement is
to reposition the beef
industry so that it can return
to profitability, with or
without a border opening,"
Mitchell said while unveiling
the aid package.
Highlights of the federal
program include:
• $488 million in support,
which includes support for
calf producers

80,000 extra
tonnes of offshore meat -
that's above and beyond our
quota of 76,000 tonnes,"
Alton said. "The past 10
years the federal government
has increased the quota
meaning each year we're
bringing in more of this
offshore meat."
Alton said packing plants
could mix 10 per cent beef
trimmings (fat) with 90 per
cent of this boneless cow dry
beef and can then turn around
and call it a Canadian
product.
"("The federal government)
promised for three years they
wouldn't bring in any more
offshore meat," Alton said.
"Now they're turning
around and announcing to the
public that they're going to
let offshore meat come back
in above the quota."
Alton estimates that four
cows equal about one tonne
meaning the 80,000 -tonne
quota of Offshore beef is
and money to
help kill aging
cattle
• Provisions
for 'fast -
tracking' new
packing plant
• Transition
measures to
support the
industry while
the new plants
arc developed
• Developing
more foreign
markets to
reduce
reliance on
U.S. exports.
In 2002. before the 13SE
scare closed the border, those
exports were valued at $354
million in live cattle and
$292 million in beef product
from Ontario producers and
$1.8 billion nationally
Walker, who doesn't think
the border will open before
2010, questioned the
government's plan to increase
slaughter capacity in Canada.
"How arc they going to
make that work today when it
wouldn't work hack in the
1980s?" Walker asked. "The
only way that would work is
if the U.S. border was closed
forever.
"You know that as soon as
we build a packing house or
get the capacity that we can
kill our own cattle (the
Americans) are going to open
the border and break all of
our packing houses (by
undercutting prices).
"It's very frustrating and
everybody needs money and

need home care or are entering a long-term care facility.
Wednesday's festivities also included an awards
ceremony for both paid staff and volunteers with the
CCAC.
Of the 20 people nominated, four were given awards,
two from Huron and two from Perth.
"It's so moving to see the dedication and commitment
of people. That's why we like to recognize all the
nominees, not just the winners. We have a really hard
time picking the winners because there are a lot of heroes
out there," said CCAC executive director Kathy Scanlon.
The winners were Ervin Steinmann, of Dashwood,
Lynne Hildebrand, of Huron County Adult Day Services,
Rose Snyders, of RR 5 Mitchell and Dr. Russell Latuskie,
of Listowel Memorial Hospital.
everybody's calling and
saying what can you do about
it. Well, we can't do anything
about it because it's all in our
government's hands and they
don't care."
Alton, also fed up with the
way everything has
developed over the last 15
months, said he's lost hope
that the border will ever
reopen.
"Yon rnipht as well believe
it's not (going to reopen),"
Alton said.
"It's like walking through
the desert and you keep
seeing water. It doesn't do
you any good thinking or
believing that's there until
you've actually got your cup
full of water and you can
drink it.
"So you might as well live
and believe it's not going to
onen and try to adant to that "
