Carol Carter, along with her
three teammates, are all golden
girls after winning gold at the
national women's fours lawn
bowling championship last
month.
Carter, a Mitchell resident
and Seaforth Lawn Bowling
Club member, won the
championship in British
Columbia.
During the gold medal game
against the Ontario B team,
Carter and her teammates said,
"We already have silver so
let's go for
the gold."
Halfway
through the
gold medal
match the
teams had
to battle
pouring
rain which
made for
difficult
lawn bowling conditions.
Carter's team won the match
16-12 to become Canadian
women's fours lawn bowling
champions.
The team was comprised of
lead Carter and Exeter. Lawn
Bowling Club members skip
Jo Anne Bugler, vice Gloria
McFalls and second Dianne
Terry.
"We knew we played well
together," said Carter.
According to Carter, her
brother from Alberta watching
her play at the tournament
helped her feel more at home.
"For me that made me feel
more at home because I had
some family there," said
Carter.
In July, the team won gold
after battling against 15 other
districts in the provincial
championship in Burlington
which qualifies them for the
nationals.
'Talking to people that don't
know anything about lawn
bowling they don't realize how
difficult it is to get to the
nationals," said Carter.
For Carter, this was her first
season competitively lawn
bowling after a two-year hiatus
from the sport.
While competing at the
provincial and national ladies
fours tournaments Carter has
won a Canadian gold in 1999
and a Canadian silver the
following year. In the
provincial tournament Carter
has won two golds, one in
1999 and one in 2000 and a
bronze in 2001.

Doig, an avid golfer himself,
fondly remembered Norman.
The pair met by chance
during a Mitchell golf
tournament in Mitchell in
1952.
"I actually beat him," Doig
said with a chuckle. "He shot
a 34 at the end of the front
nine and 1 shot 36 but at the
end of 18 he finished with 68
and 1 shot 31.
"Doig played good on the
backside - 31 is a good score
is all he said and Moe and I
have been friends ever since.
Doig. said over the years
Norman made about six trips
to the Seaforth Golf and
Country Club.
His last appearance came
about six and a half years ago
when he held a golf clinic
Norman's brother Richard is
a
member of the Seaforth club.
"He hit balls in the pouring
rain and there was still about
400 people standing and
watching," Doig recalled.
Norman became a
phenomenon in the amateur
golfing circuit in the 1950s
and 1960s and was renowned
for his unusual swing and his
amazing accuracy when
hitting the ball. Lee Trevino
once called Norman "a genius
when it comes to playing the
game of golf.".
When asked about
Norman's place amongst the
greatest golfers of all time,
Doig turned to PGA great
Tom Watson and comments
he once made.
"Tom Watson was once
asked who he thought was the
greatest golfer of all time,"
Doig recalled. "He said you
can't argue with Jack
Nicklaus's record or the likes
bf Byron Nelson or Ben
Hogan.
"But, he said the finest
striker of a hall that ever lived
was Moe Norman."
Doig said Norman's
success came from hours of
endless practice.
"He hit hundreds of
thousands of halls and he
would just practice," Doig
said. "Moe had a repeating
swing and he could hit a ball
straight 100 times in a row."
Norman's swing helped
him win 13 Canadian Tour
events and seven Canadian
Senior PGA titles. He -set 33
course records and has shot
59 three times while
registering 17 holes in one.
"1 really liked Moe," Doig
said. "He was a fine golfer
and a good man."
Doig said he plans to attend
Norman's wake on Thursday.
The funeral will be held on
Friday in Kitchener.
