Seaforth 527-2291 News Local veterans and community benefitted from Legion's 75 years From Page 1 high school track team, the Seaforth Oldtimers hockey team, broomball, minor sports, lawn bowling, ringette, pee wee and bantam hockey and soccer, local children's programs such as the trout derby, the boys scouts, the Legion children's Christmas party, arena free skating, child video, girl guides and child search. It has also donated to local organizations such as the Seaforth Lions Park, the Van Egmond Society, the Seaforth Community Hospital, the Seaforth Recreation Centres, the Seaforth Dashwood Band, the Harmony Hi -Liter and the Huron Day Centre. As well, the Legion has donated to charitable organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Liver Society, Epilepsy Huron -Perth, the Children's Hospital, Flowers of Hope, the Arthritis Society, the Terry Fox Run, the Lung Association, Easter Seals and March of Dimes. The Legion has benefitted every age group of the community, from school children, who participate each year in the public speaking, essay. poem and drawing contests, to seniors who enjoy the Monday afternoon card parties. "We've always supported pee wee hockey and it cost a lot of money to run all those tournaments. especially during the years when we had teams going to silver stick tournaments all over the place," say MacLeod. And, two local youth have achieved national acclaim through the Seaforth Legion. Stephanie Giller's poem Only A Soldier Would Know, hangs in the halls of the Parliament buildings and Elise Ringgenberg came first nationally for a black and white poster two years ago and second nationally Iasi year. Another unique feature of the Seaforth Legion is its historical displays, created mostly by Frank Phillips. "We have more history here than anywhere in thc county," claims Phillips, who has filled cabinets and display cases on almost every available wall space, including stairwells, with Legion memorabilia from A photo from local members. "One kid from Vancouver came here to research the 161st Regiment for his university thesis and he got everything he needed right here," says Phillips. "Our museum is exceptionally good because all the artifacts and pictures have names on them," adds MacLeod. Phillips says people have come from all over researching family members at the Seaforth Legion. "One guy came up from Florida looking for information about his grandfather," he says. During the past 15 years, members have also been working towards renovating the Legion facilities with a new deck in 1988, an addition of a games room, handicapped washrooms, an elevator and executive offices for both the Legion and the Auxiliary in 1992 and the purchase of the Huron Street lot behind the Legion in 994. As well, the cenotaph was repointcd in 1999 in conjunction with the town of Seaforth and local donations and in 2003. a Trillium Foundation grant allowed the renovation of the Legion kitchen and the rebuilding of the bar and lounge downstairs, all with volunteer 1959 shows the beginnings of the Seaforth Legion building on Main Street. 15% OFF*SALE*15% OFF*SALE*15% OFF*SALE* w 0 rol10 Nie PP 1 L. n Lli. "There's a lot of talent in this place," says MacLeod. Eight years ago, the Legion built a memorial to the associate members that have passed away, many of whom are the sons and grandsons of veterans. The monument is a reminder of how the membership at the Legion has expanded over the years from solely veterans, to their sons and daughters in 1972, to their brothers, sisters and family members and finally to any interested community members a few years ago. "Why we carry on is remembrance - that's what it's all about." says public relations officer Errol Skillender. "And. caring for the veterans," adds Phillips. "This place is not just a watering hole. It's a gathering place for the community." says MacLeod. While the Seaforth Legion is always looking to recruit new members. MacLeod says the local fraternal organization is happy to see some area young people joining up. "We're very lucky here. We've got a good young bunch that has taken over and they're doing a helluva job. It was the young guns and all their friends at our anniversary dance (in August)," says Philips. "About six guys in their late 20s and 30s have joined who are the sons and grandsons of Legion members and we call them the young guns. They've become our resident barbecue cooks," explains MacLeod. And, with 50 out-of-town members from as far away as Texas, Oregon and British Columbia, MacLeod would still like to attract more local members. "The important thing is we're still alive and well and still very active in the community. If I have anything to do with it, this place will survive," says MacLeod. A drumhead service will be held this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Seaforth cenotaph, following a parade from the Legion to celebrate the 75th anniversary. Open houses will explain hospital funding challenge From Page 1 will he holding five or six open houses in communities from Clinton to Stratford in late September to explain provincial funding and gain public input about cost savings. "A lot of dialogue needs to take place in the next six weeks and we're not going to try to sugarcoat it. No one is going to he happy with us if thc current path is followed," he said. On Sept. 14, Williams said, a meeting is planned between the Alliance, the health units in Huron and Perth Counties and the Community Care Access Centres to brainstorm ways to reduce the demands on local hospitals. As well, hospitals from across Southwestern Ontario are meeting in late September to talk about possible cooperative cost-saving measures. Williams expected some "pushback" to the government from the Ontario Hospital Association since hospitals across Ontario are facing a total of $600 million in deficits. "Thc hospital industry is at a crossroads but now is not the right time to force hospitals to balance their budgets. A better strategy is to help us transition with interim funds until we can decrease the demands on hospitals and the OHA is focussing on that," he said. "I think the provincial requirements are a little too aggressive." said Williams.
