Five local girls, from
Seaforth, Hensall and
Brussels. were members of
the Under 19 Southwestern
Ontario Regional Girls
Rugby team that won silver
in the recent Ontario
Summer Games.
Ashley Marion, 17. of
Seaforth, Denise Ritchie. 19.
of Hensall, Amber Caldwell.
17, of Hensall, Ashley
Bruxer. of Hensall and
Rachel Elliott, 18, of
Brussels were members of
the team that won or tied
every game until the finals
during three days in August
at the Ontario Summer
Games in London.
"The only game we lost
was the gold medal game
against Toronto Rugby
Union. And, that's pretty
good since in Toronto, they
play all year but we're a
two-week team," says
Ritchie.
Ritchie. who played on the
Southwestern Ontario team
two years ago at the Summer
Games, says the team was a
lot stronger and cohesive this
year.
"We didn't win one game
two years ago. This year was
a huge accomplishtnent. We
were a lot stronger and we
got along a lot better as a
team." she says.
The Southwestern Ontario
team won its first game 15-0
against Ottawa, won its
second game 20-3 against
Niagara, tied Toronto 7-7,
beat Niagara 10-0 and then
lost to Toronto in the final
22-7.
"Some games were tough
and we lost a lot of girls to
injuries. Two girls were on
crutches by the end, one with
a broken ankle," says
Ritchie.
Caldwell was out of half a
game after being kicked.
"It's a rough game but 1
like everything about it,"
says Caldwell.
"I got some of my hair
ripped out during the last
game." adds Marion.
During the school year, the
Hensall girls play rugby for
South Huron Secondary
School in Exeter while
Marion and Elliott play for
St. Anne's Secondary School
in Clinton.
While Ritchie has
graduated from high school,
she hopes to try out for the
rugby team at Brock
University.
Both Marion and Caldwell
plan to try out for the
Southwestern Ontario Under
19 team again in two years
for the next Summer Games.
