Sports Staffa university student wins gold at 2004 World Inline Cup By Marc Hulot Mitchell Advacate Staff University student Aleisha Lusk of Staffa thought playing inline hockey would be a great way to hone her ice hockey skills during the off- season. The Guelph Gryphons goaltender now has a gold medal to add to her list of off season accomplishments after competing with Team Ontario at the 2004 World Inline Cup held recently in London, Ont.. Nine nations, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore and the United States, sent 63 teams to the tournament. Lusk said two of her favourite things about the tournament were meeting people from other countries and participating in the opening ceremonies. "All the athletes marched in with their country's flag," she said. "It was really interesting." Her favourite moment though, came on the ice when she saw the tournament winning goal go into the opposition's net during overtime. "We all skated down to the other end and were in a huddle," she explained. "Everyone started chanting 'Canada, Canada.' That was really exciting. "It's a good feeling to know that all the hard work paid off and we were able to come together as a team." What makes Lusks' accomplishment all the more impressive is that this was the first time she was competing in a competitive inline hockey competition and she has only been playing the sport for about five years. She has spent most of her life concentrating on ice hockey. Lusk said there are a lot of differences between playing inline hockey and ice hockey. "You don't have the lateral movement and you can't move as well," Lusk said about playing net on inline skates. "It takes a fair bit of time to adjust." "But the inline hockey is a nice change of pace for the summer. l can still practice my skills and stay up to par." One things that is similar with both sports is the mental preparation. which is especially important for goaltenders, according to Lusk. We wish you a Safe & Happy Holiday! a Lusk r "I break the game down into two minute sections and I just concentrate on making the next save," she said. "I enjoy the pressure. I enjoy knowing that I can win or lose a game for a team. I enjoy challenges and being a goalie lefinitely provides that for me. Team Ontario assistant coach Doug Easter said Lusk was a valuable member of the team. "She did everything that was expected and she carried us a couple games. The first game we played, she stood on her head and made all kinds of plays," he said. "1f she lets one in, she doesn't seem to let it bother her." It was Easter who suggested that Lusk be invited to play for Team Ontario. He had coached her four or five years ago but she was playing out of the net at the time. A couple years later Easter saw Lusk play against his daughter's team in the London women's inline skating league. Her play in net left a lasting impression with Easter and when Team Ontario was short on goaltenders, Lusk immediately jumped to mind. "It worked out great and we're glad she came aboard," he said. "She's a great person and got along with all the girls." Lusk, 21, said she learned a lot about goaltending and about hockey in general during the world cup and she hopes to use that knowledge to improve her play during the upcoming university hockey season, which will be her third with the Gryphons. At the end of last season the Gryphons were ranked the No. 1 varsity team in the West OUA division. During the season Lusk was university's player of the week twice and the O U A ' s female athlete of the week after posting 305 shutout minutes. At the end of the season, she was named to the OUA West first all-star team. Lusk said she enjoys playing hockey in university because she gets to play with so many great players, including members of Canada's national team. In December, the university is planning their first Eurotour, which Lusk is eager to participate in. "I've never been overseas," she said, adding that they will travel to Sweden and Denmark over a 10 -day period. "It will be a good cultural experience." The girls will be doing a number of different things, including playing against the Danish National Women's team and several teams from the Swedish Women's League. As for the future, Lusk, who is currently studying biomedical science, said she would enjoy having the opportunity to one day play for the national women's hockey team. "I'd love to go as far as the game will let me."
