Barcla- Insurance 718.6790 14 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, Sept. 1, 2004 News Local business considers moving instead of rezoning By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Tyler Papple is considering moving his business out of town, rather than pay $1,000 to apply for a chance to rezone it. "Maybe it snakes sense to move to Stratford. I've been looking into property in Stratford," he told council at it Aug. 24 meeting. Papple, who's run a farm produce and garden supply business on Main Street for 14 years, was notified recently by Huron East's building official Paul Josling that he does not meet the zoning bylaws and must stop business "immediately." After Papple appeared at council Aug. 3, he was told Huron East would look at zoning solutions to allow his business to continue operating, either by changing the downtown's C4 zoning to include farm produce sales or by asking Papple to apply for rezoning his grandfather John Turnbull's downtown property. And, after receiving a reply from the Huron County planning department discouraging council from permitting farm produce in the C4 commercial zone or amending the official plan, Huron East council suggested Papple apply to rezone his property. "I know it's not the answer you wanted to hear Tyler but it's the hest we can do," said Mayor Joe Seili. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan told Papple that he agreed with the planning department's recommendation. "The planning department didn't want to give you C4 because you're C3," he said, adding that Papple could word how he wants his property rezoned when he made an application. But, Papple asked why the planning department wasn't asked to consider a fourth option that he had requested of council - to allow core -compatible businesses in the downtown. "If they're going to be as sticky with other businesses as they have been with me, it leaves several downtown businesses vulnerable to complaint," he said in a phone interview. Papple said applying to rezone his grandfather's property would be an expensive process at a cost of $1,000. "I don't know if I want to do business in town if this is the way the town is going to do business with tne," he said. "Putting $1,000 into Main Street, Stratford or Exeter makes a lot more sense. Spending $1,000 may force me to make a decision," he said. At the council meeting, McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure expressed concern that council wasn't doing enough to retain local business. "People are wondering why we can't keep businesses in town and here we're going to drive one out," she said. Rosanna Grobbink, of Walton wins Queen of the Furrow title By Cheryl Heath Clinton News -Record Editor The skies proved interminably dark and threatening but that didn't keep more than 200 farmers and visitors from participating in the 77th annual Huron County Plowmen Association's annual Plowing Match at Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson's Babylon Line farm near Varna. Dowson says dozens of community volunteers came out Thursday to pitch tents and ensure everything was ready for the beginning of the plowing match that afternoon. The event, which featured everything from horse - plowing to threshing demonstrations, also featured horsedrawn wagon rides, exhibitors and homemade baked goods from Varna and Goshen church volunteers. Jack Elliott a Strathroy-area resident and president of the Middlesex Plowmen's Association, whose son Richard participated in Friday afternoon's plowing match, says his family has made a tradition out of attending plowing matches in southern Ontario. He says the events are always anticipated since it Rosanna Grobbink is crowned Furrow by outgoing queen Kora gives his family the chance to socialize with farmers and antique machinery owners. The competitive aspect of plowing matches is only a small part of the show, he says. "You don't try and beat the other fellow, you try and beat yourself." The festivities wrapped up at the Stanley Complex Friday evening with a barbecue and the crowning of the Queen of the Furrow for 2004-05. The title was earned by 18 - Huron County Queen of the Bennett. year-old Rosanna Grobbink of Walton. "It's been a very wonderful day and a great experience," says Grobbink. Meanwhile, outgoing queen Kora Bennett lauded the Huron County Plowmen's Association for giving her the opportunity to serve the region. She adds all 11 contestants did a spectacular job. "On any day, there's several of you who would've won," she says. Box &Ida SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL We are dedicated to your confidence" at 47 High St. Seaforth 527-1142 - Office CHRISTOPHER M.
