New St. James principal, Donna
Gregus, encouraged by predecessors
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Donna Gregus received
encouragement from two
former principals of St.
James School in Seaforth as
she took the job herself.
Gregus, who was vice-
principal at Holy Name of
Mary School in St. Marys
under principal Larry
Murray last year, says he
supported her step up into
her first principal's job,
As well last year, she co-
chaired a board committee
with Fran Craig, St. James'
last principal who retired in
June.
"I have great respect for
both Larry Murray and Frau
Craig and their legacy here.
They've both been very
supportive in my new and
exciting adventure here,"
she says.
Gregus, who lives in
Exeter with her husband and
two children, has worked as
a teacher for the Huron -
Perth Catholic District
School Board for 10 years,
one of which was spent as
vice-principal.
"I grew up in St. Marys
and I'm a product of the
Huron -Perth Catholic school
board. I've always wanted
to be a part of the board. I
wouldn't want to be
anywhere else," she says.
While she has no
immediate plans for new

A third dead bird has
tested positive for West
Nile virus in Huron
County, says the Huron
County Health Unit.
The dead blue jay was
found in Clinton.
To date, the virus has
not been detected in
mosquitoes in Huron
County.
However, the health unit
will continue mosquito
surveillance across the
Huron County until the
first frost.
Dr. Beth Henning,
medical officer of health,
reminds Huron County
residents and visitors that
it is important for people
to continue protecting
themselves and their
families from mosquito
bites due to increasing
West Nile virus activity in
Huron County and across
Ontario.
This is the time of year
when humans are at
highest risk of infection.
About 80 per cent of
people who contract West
Nile virus will have no
syniptoms and the
majority of those who do
become ill, report flu-like
symptoms like headache,
muscle weakness, and
fatigue. Symptoms
generally disappear in
three to five days.
"Use personal
protection against
mosquito bites as the risk
of being bitten by an
infected mosquito and
contracting the virus is
highest during the last two
weeks of August and first
two weeks of September",
says Dr. Beth Henning,
Medical Officer of Health.

the St. James library.
"This is one Of the leading
schools in computer
technology and 1 hope to he
able to continue that. It's
one of the things that
attracted me to the school,"
she says.
New tetherhalls and
benches are expected to he

Highway 8 before the new
school year begins next

"The older kids will he

That field is a positive thing
for the whole community,"
says Gregus.
She adds that the Sealorth
community has already
given her an
"overwhelmingly positive"
welcome to the school
already.
"The most important thing
is providing a quality faith -
oriented education and
working together as a
