Oldest parish in Huron Tract
being `suppressed' by diocese
From Pogo 1
the local community has
been expecting an
announcement about the
church's future since a
meeting in May with the
deanery implementation
team.
"Everyone in St.
Columban is pretty upset
and we can't get a reason as
to why they want to close
the church. We have a gut
feeling they're upset with us
and they're going to show us
who's boss," says Coyne.
He says the community is
even upset about the
language being used by the
diocese to close the church.
The term used under Canon
Law to close a church is
"suppression.'

dictionary. It's not a very
nice word. 'Fhe word makes
you feel worse," says
Coyne.
He adds that while the St.
Columban parish is small
with only 50-60 families, it's
a community that is
"holding its own."
"All the bills are being
paid and we have $80,00() in
the bank," he says.
Father Peter Keller, of St.
Patrick's Kinkora Church,
who serves on the deanery
implementation team, says
St. Columban is one of
seven churches undergoing a
review to look at the long-
term viability of rural
churches in the Huron -Perth
area.
"Several factors have
combined together to lead to
the recommendation to close
the church. The first is the
tragedy of declining rural
populations and the next is
its proximity to two other
churches," he says.
Because St. Columban
Church is four kilometres
from Dublin's St. Patrick's
Church and seven
kilometres from Seaforth's
St. James Church, its
"longterm viability is not
very sound," says Keller.
He says the review of
seven arca churches -
including the Roman
Catholic churches in Blyth,
Lucknow, St. Augustine,
Hesson and St. Brigid's
Kennicott south of Monkton
- is an attempt to lookat the
best possible way to serve
the Roman Catholic
community in the arca and
actually save some rural
churches.
"1 know it doesn't seem
that way to St. Columhan
but we have to do something
proactive in thc arca. I was
ordanied to build up rural
churches, not to close them
down," he says.
Keller says thc rural
population is declining,
St. Columban Church
particularly in the 18-44 age
group.
He says thc next stage is
to look at. the other parishes
and to form transition teams
that will help congregations
from closed churches find a
home in another parish and
help the welcoming parishes
minister to new members.
"Some real hurt has been
done and we want to help
parishes reach out to their
neighbours. They're going
to get some training about
how to welcome people," he
says.
St. Columban is the oldest
Roman Catholic parish in
the Huron Tract between
Guelph and Lake Huron.
It was formed in 1932,
building its first log church
in 1858. Before that,
services were held in a
tavern on Highway 8 by a
priest who would travel on
horseback once a month
from Guelph.
The log church was
replaced by a large elaborate
church in 1864, which was
destroyed by fire in 1909.
The current church was built
in 1911 to replace the one
destroyed by fire.
"St Columban is a tiny
slice of what once was. It's
been sliced a4vay0over the
past 160 years," agrees
Keller.
