Because of the nature of the program, the operating costs are considerable. As such, we rely on the kindness of local businesses and organizations to provide much needed supplies, such as food, craft materials and sports equipment, to give educational tours, or donate their time, over the course of the summer. The 2004 Summer Day Camp staff wish to take this opportunity to thank the businesses and groups throughout Huron County for their contributions. We also wish to thank the clowns Scribbles, Knobby. Jimho, and Raggedy Ann and Andy for making our party week so much fun. To all our supporters, our sincerest thanks. Your contributions made a difference in the lives of these children. The 2004 CAS Summer Camp Staff (Gillian, Andria, Karen, Monique and Melissa) News Seaforth part of university study on authentic architecture, tourism By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor A University of Waterloo graduate student is using Seaforth's architectural heritage to determine whether tourists in four Ontario towns appreciate authentic architecture or prefer their modern replicas. His only problem so far has been finding enough tourists in Seaforth to respond to the questionaire. "I've only got eight surveys so far but I'm hoping for 25," says Mike Sawchuck. "It's been tough to find tourists here but a lot of local people have taken an interest." By asking participants to look six photos from different towns, Sawchuck is hoping to determine if tourists recognize the difference between heritage buildings in communities like Seaforth and Perth in comparison with Kleinburg and St. Jacob's where new buildings have been designed to look like Victorian architecture. "Seaforth and Perth are both very authentic. Both have had Main Street programs to revive their downtowns and Seaforth's downtown is actually a heritage conservation district," he says. In contrast, St. Jacob's and Kleinburg- have had a lot of its actual heritage destroyed and replaced with new buildings in the old style. "I'm attempting to find out why tourists come to each community and the different attractions to different types of buildings," says Sawchuck. "Some like the old buildings no matter how run down they are and others just like pretty buildings," he says. Sawchuck says Seaforth is the least marketed of the four communities being studied but one of the most authentic. In fact, he had not heard of Seaforth before beginning his thesis, even though he grew up in Pickering and has spent the past six years living in Waterloo. Since visiting Seaforth, Sawchuck has been impressed by the authentic architecture, particularly the Cardno Block, which he thinks would be the identifying architecture of the town. "Anyone's who's passed through Mike Sawchuck, University of Waterloo researcher would recognize Seaforth from that building. If you showed more people the Cardno Block, I think people, especially those interested in architecture, would say, 'Where is that'' I want to go there,'" he says. Sawchuck adds that he's noticed Seaforth's current tourists are often visiting family or friends in the area. "The weekends here are more empty than the weekdays and that speaks volumes about the tourist situation here. By 2 p.m. Saturday, the streets were almost empty," he says of his attempt to find tourists to answer his survey during the past week. However, he says that because of Seaforth's rare situation of being able to claim heritage architecture in the entire downtown, more opportunities exist to market the town. "1 think more can he done but there's always a trade-off. The risk of marketing as a tourist town is becoming more about the tourists than the locals. That could he the reason Seaforth hasn't been marketed more." says Sawchuck. After exploring why and how authentic heritage building owners preserve their buildings in the second phase of his research. Sawchuck wants to make recommendations to each of the studied towns. For Seaforth and Perth, he hopes to provide recommendations about how to boost tourism. while for St. Jacob's and Kleinburg, he wants to make recommendations about how and why to preserve heritage architecture. His study should he completed in April of 2005. Bluewater Mayor Dowson defends amalgamation By Ben Forrest Lakeshore Advance Staff Despite what appears to discontent in the villages of Bayfield and Hensall, Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson says there are some who aren't unhappy to be part of his municipality. In fact, he says, some think they're even better off. Dowson says he "can't answer" allegations. that services have gone down and that towns like Zurich have received preferential treatment since amalgamation, but says he feels the municipal staff has worked hard to meet the needs of all of its communities. Dowson says he believes Bayfield has had its fair share of the benefits, including considerable improvements to its arena over the past year valued at around $200,000. Among the improvements were an updaied air conditioning system, a new dehumidifier, new water heater and new sign. The ceiling in the auditorium at the community centre has also been replaced, Dowson says. The mayor also points out that Bluewater plans to build an addition onto the town's library that will include public washrooms, be growing meeting a long-standing need in the Iakeshore town. The parking area at the public beach has also been refurbished, with cement blocks installed, and a soccer field has been developed. along with a number of other things. Dowson also rebuffs the idea that Bluewater has attempted to take Bayfield's identity away since it became a part of the municipality. Comments that isolated the disappearance of a road sign north of town reading "Bayfield" as evidence for loss of identity are unfounded, he implies. Ile claims the sign was knocked into a ditch by a snow plow and, since it was put up by the Ontario government, Bluewater has no jurisdiction to replace it. Dowson is well aware of those in both Hensall and Bayfield who want to separate from Bluewater, but says they seem to ignore the positive things the municipality has done for them. At a Bluewater Council meeting on Aug. 16, Dowson says he has a certain nostalgia for the late Stanley Township, in which he resides, but is glad they amalgamated. "i'ln proud of what we've accomplished in the last three and a half years," he said.
