Mitchell Godkin, of RR 4 Walton, placed second overall in the 50cc 4-6 class and won a trophy that is level with his forehead. "It's the biggest trophy he's ever won by far," says his mom Katrin Godkin. "He's quite excited but he's still a little bit shy about the whole thing," she said. TransCan organizer Brett Lee said Godkin "did awesome" at the Nationals. "If he'd gotten a few better starts, he might have gotten first place. He and his brother, (Lucas, 5) have all the tools they need to be the next JSRs (Nationals pro champion Jean Sebastian Roy)," said Lee. The 13th annual Walton TransCan, host of the Canadian Amateur National Championship and the Pro National Championships from Aug. 11 to 15, expected over 22,000 spectators to watch the almost full slate of 962 participants from all over North America. Lee said that while the final numbers have not been counted yet, attendance topped last year with full classes in all but three categories. "We always get a strong pro turnout but the amateur turnout was above average on a national scale," he said. Events coordinator Larry Dalrymple said this year's Nationals in Walton hosted a "sea of people" and during a helicopter ride above the event, he saw that the event took up a larger space than the village of Walton. "It was a great weekend with great weather. On Wednesday, we were scared by the rain but the sun tame out the next day and the weather and the conditions were perfect for the rest of the event," he said.
