"There's been discussion about quitting smoking since that's the ultimate solution but the diehard smokers are not giving up," says Hill, adding that at least half of the Creamery's 150 employees are smokers. Charlie Smith, owner of Seaforth's Boilersmith, says he's facing the same challenge with a large number of smoking employees. "We've been sending notices out to people in the plant to give them advance notice and incentives to ease themselves into it but I've not seen a great reduction in the people who smoke," says Smith. He says Boilersmith's smoking room will no longer be used but he's hesitant to create a designated outdoor smoking area since the plant is so large, some employees would have to travel a great distance to use it. "I expect people will just step outside at the nearest door," he says. Jim MacLeod, president of the Seaforth Legion, one of the Area musical talent gets chance vocal opponents of the smokefree bylaw when the county was debating the issue last year, says no preparations have yet been made to comply with the bylaw. "We're still trying to get exempt, 1 think," he says, adding that the issue will be discussed at the next executive meeting. "I think our guys are going to have a hard time with•it. I look around today and I see 20 people in here smoking," says MacLeod, during a phone interview from the Legion. • Hak agrees that her patrons at Janet's Donuts will find the bylaw difficult. "We have a lot of smokers coming here and I hope the bylaw doesn't affect business too much. A lot like to sit and relax and read the paper with a coffee and cigarette and maybe now, they'll leave after one cup instead of hanging around for two," she says. But, Terry Smith, owner of Terry's Restaurant, doesn't anticipate any problems. "It will probably upset a few people for a few days but we have picnic tables outside to accommodate them. We'll tell them to put it out or get out," says Smith. "We have a pretty good clientelle here. They'll be cooperative," he says. to shine at Huron County Idol From Page 1 in the choir. At that school he also started penning his own reggae songs. Francis had stopped performing music in public until he started singing at karaoke. "I never really thought 1 was a singer until karaoke. I gave it a try and everybody seems to like it (my singing)," said Francis. At last Thursday's Huron County Idol, Francis performed Rambling Rose by Nat King Cole and his karaoke signature song What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Francis said that he qualified for a previous contest, but he did not make it too far. He said that his "favorite part is just singing for people." The winner of the first week's Huron County Idol was Darcy Davie, of Waterloo, who heard about the contest from a friend from Stratford. "Everything I'm performing right now is all new material. So I'm just excited for next time and hopefully I'II have some new stuff," said Davie. The winner of each of the eight weeks' competition will face off for the top four seats in a semi-final contest on Oct. 7 and then the top four will compete for prizes on the grand finale, Oct. 14. The health unit reports that no positive test findings in mosquitoes have been made yet in Huron County but the first mosquitoes carrying the virus in Ontario have bccn found in the Greater Toronto arca. Dr. Beth Henning, Huron's medical officer of health, reminds local residents and visitors it is important that people continue to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites from now until the first frost.
