Listening to. Arabic covers of rock
songs is an amusing experience
From Page 4
home from the store cwsed Kati to remark, "I think objects
should have weight proportional to their opaqueness. Of
course, then black licorice would be really heavy.
Luckily, we've been given early days, which is nice for two
reasons: we're off the Tell, and everyone has time to shower
before lunch.
We got a new bus last week. The windows all open, none
of the seats are ripped, and the radio works. This means that
we have all got a crash course in Arabic radio.
It seems that, like the 40 per cent rule in Canada, a certain
number of the songs played have to be by homegrown artists
(or, Arabic ones at any rate).
This is amusing for a couple reasons. Firstly because the
contrast between Arab pop and songs like "Everybody Hurts"
or "Rock the Kasbah" is always a shock at 4 a.m., and
secondly because the Arab covers of our songs are quite
funny. I thought nothing would ever top "I Will Survive" right
up until the minute 1 heard the Arabic version of "Louie,
Louie."
We have two workmen in our area. Jaber works with us,
and Saoud works next door with Karin. Saoud is Jaber's
younger brother and the two of them tease each other
constantly.
It's amusing, mostly because it's so much like home. Jaber
talks to us in (Arabic) babytalk, and it's funny, because we
still only understand about half of what he says. We are
getting better though.
He can't really pronouce our names very well, so he calls us
all Humda which, after two weeks of trying, we discovered
means "excellent."
Still, when all three of us are at the bottom of our now two -
metre deep hole, it's hard to tell which of us he is talking to.

St. Columban woman raises $I,o67
withgranddaughter on .MS Bike Tour
"I went with a 10 -year-old
girl who raised $200," said
Weirmier, adding that she
raised $1067 this year. "1 am
hoping for more next year,"
Weirmier said.
She said she could not
have raised that much money
without the support of local
people and business.
This year the tour raised
$400,000 for the MS Society
of Canada.
Weirmier said that Soper
was the youngest person to
make the two day, 180 km
trip. "It is supposed to be 164
km, but with construction it
was about 180 km," she said.
"We were the last ones (to
finish) on Saturday, but at
least we made it," she said,
adding "She (Samantha) has
real dedication at 10."
Weirmier said that she rode
with Soper the entire tour and
will possibly have another
partner next year.
"Sam's six-year-old
brother is starting to train for
next year," she said.
She said the Sopers'
mother and father, as well as
her grandfather, also
participated.
Weirmier said she belongs
to a biking group out of
Kinkora called the "Easy
Riders."
"I am hoping to get more
people to join next year and
raise more money," she said.

What started as a charity
bike ride to support friends
and members of her
community, has hit closer to
home for Dianna Weirmier.
Just after participating in
the Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Bike Tour from Grand Bend
to London, Weirmier, owner
of Dianna's Country Bakery
and Cafe in St. Columban,
learned that her first cousin
had been diagnosed with the
disease.
"It is usually a female
disease," said Weirmier, "He
is a male. On the ride I was
thinking, `Thank God I don't
have a family member with
this,' but now here it is. It is
beginning to become more
and more common; it is kind
of scary."
This was the second year
that Weirmier participated in
the MS Bike Tour's yearly
event, held July 24 and 25
this year. She rode the first
year because of friends and
neighbours, including a St.
Columban-area woman she
watched being carried into a
local wedding because of her
MS, suffering from the
disease.
"Watching her really
affected me," she said.

First Huron County
crow found infected
with West Nile virus
The first dead crow testing positive for West Nile Virus
(WNV) has been found in Huron County.
The crow was found in the Wingham area after a total of
18 birds were submitted for testing.
The first positive bird during 2003 was found in Central
Huron on July 5. To date, 32 of 37 health units have
reported positive birds for a total of 122 positive birds in
Ontario.
In 2002 and 2003, the majority of human cases of West
Nile virus in Ontario were reported in late August and
September.
The health unit urges residents to remain vigilant in
reducing standing water around homes, cottages and
businesses. It is important that people continue to protect
themselves and their families from mosquito bites from mid
August until the first frost.
"The mosquitoes most likely to bite you are those
breeding in your own backyard", says Dr. Beth Henning,
Medical Officer of Health. "Eliminating areas of standing
water is critical and is the single most important measure to
reduce mosquitoes and control the spread of the West Nile
virus."
There have been no human or equine cases of West Nile
Virus in Huron County so far. Mosquito larval dipping and
adult trapping activities continue across the county to
determine which types of mosquitoes typically breed in
Huron and whether or not they are actually carrying the
virus. The virus has not yet been detected in Huron County
mosquito populations; however York Region, City of
Toronto and Timiskaming have received laboratory
confirmation of positive mosquito pools.
"In Huron County, the risk of West Nile virus infection
has been low so far, but as the summer progresses, the risk
of infection increases," explains Henning.
Mosquitoes tend to be more active this time of year,
biting humans more often.
The Huron health unit will increase mosquito surveillance
activities within a five -kilometre radius of where the
positive crow was found.
Huron County residents are asked to continue to report
the location of any dead crows or blue jays to the health
unit.

Health Unit WNV Infoline at 482-3416 Ext. 2001 or if long

Speeding gravel
trucks concern
Kippen man,
Huron East told
Huron East will pass along a concern to the Huron
OPP about high speed travel of Targe trucks on
Chiselhurst Road.
Council received a letter from J.B. Simpson, of RR 2
Kippen, at its Aug. 3 meeting. The letter said Simpson
is concerned about the safety of small children and pets
who live on the road between Hensall Road and the
west end of Perth Line 19 because of speeding gravel
trucks.
"It is a frightening experience to be anywhere near the
road when one of these monsters roars past, throwing
gravel like machine gun fire. On a paved road, with
reduced speed, this problem would be reduced
significantly," said the letter.
Simpson asked that the two kilometres of road in
question be paved and have the speed limit reduced to
70 kilometres per hour.
"We will send the letter to the OPP so they can keep
an eye on that arca," said Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan.
