Seaforth
firefighters
get thanked
for role
in downtown
Goderich
blaze
Seaforth firefighters
received a "hearfelt" thank -
you from Triangle Discount
Stores owner Nelson Frank
for their role fighting the
fire on the Goderich Square
recently.
"I had never before
witnessed firsthand a fire of
such great magnitude, and
seeing the firefighters risk
their lives to do their jobs
made me realize what
courage and dedication
these men exemplify," said.
Frank's letter to Huron East
council at its Aug. 3
meeting.
Seaforth was called by
the Goderich Fire
Department through a
Mutual Aid agreement to
send its aerial truck and
four fightfighters to the
Goderich Triangle Discount
fire at 11:17 a.m. and they
returned the same day at
`"Tiley set up and bad the
aerial pumping water on the
structure 'for the most part
of the afternoon," said
Huron East Fire Chief
Marty Bedard, during a
phone interview.
Bedard said that
Goderich Fire Department
sent its aerial truck to the
Main Street fire in Seaforth
in the late 1990s before
Seaforth acquired an aerial
truck in 2000.
Huron East

helping them move into a

After having words
during moving day, the
man returned the next day
and made threats of
violence to the couple
while they were sitting on
the verandah.
An OPP officer came
across the man in
Egmondville and arrested
him.
He is scheduled to
attend court in Goderich
on Sept. 20.
Huron East
protests loss
of municipal
drain funding
By Susan Hundertmark

A recent announcement
that the province will
discontinue
municipal
drains in rural
Ontario will
send the
process back
100 years,
Deputy -Clerk
Brad Knight
told Huron
East council
on Aug. 3.
"Essentially,
the province
has removed
$100,000 from
the local
economy and
that's going to
hurt a lot," he
said.
Knight
attended a meeting in
Guelph last week, three days
after receiving notice that
the province will stop
providing the one-third grant
for agricultural properties for
new municipal drains and
drain maintenance activities.
He said he was one of
close to 75 people at the
meeting where a
presentation was made by
the director of the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
the assistant Deputy -
Minister.
"The assistant Deputy -
Minister was under quite a
funding
lot of heat that day but she
didn't back down," he said.
reminded

said Grey
council
forwarded a
detailed
response at
the time
suggesting
the tile
drainage
program be
eliminated
since it
benefits only
a handful of
property
owners but
asked that
the other
programs be
retained
property owners
receive some benefits.
But, because the savings
to the province from
discontinuing the grants total
$5 million, Knight said the
province's savings are
"insignificant, less than
peanuts."
"1t seems rather surprising
that at a time when the rural
economy is under significant
stress that the province
would eliminate the
programs as their decision
removes money from the
rural economies," he said in

The Seaforth Fire Department was called
to a combine fire on the farm of Steve and
Val Jansen on Friday afternoon on1ighway 8
near Division Line.
The combine. which was unloading grain
when a passing motorist noticed smoke and
warned farm workers.
"All of a sudden the smoke burst into
flames,", said Jansen's brother Rudy, who
called 911 from his cellphone at 3:55 p.m.
The combine operator, Bill Millson, was in
the cab of the combinc when the fire started.
"My biggest concern was the field catching
on fire. I knew the combine was on fire, but
you can't do much about that," said Millson.
When the fire department arrived they
began extinguishing the combine blaze and
fire on the threshed wheat in an effort to stop
the flames from spreading to the nearby
unharvested crop.
"The wind was in the right direction to
keep it out of the stuff we hadn't threshed
yet," said Millson.
"Oh well, nobody's hurt, the field's okay
and we can carry on," said Millson.
Damage to the 1978 Lencr F2 combine is
estimated at $20,000.
Seaforth woman's story prompts fairy gift
Giant Tiger employee in Stratford donates her statue to Theresa Cooper's family
By Susan Hundertmark

Touched by the story of the theft of
a garden fairy from the home of a
dying Seaforth woman, Sharon Van
Den Tempel, of Sebringville; brushed
the dirt off of a similar statue in her
own garden and made it a gift to
Seaforth's Theresa Cooper.
Van Den Tempel, who works at
Stratford's Giant Tiger, was one of
several staff members asked by
owner Jack Book to consider helping
with a special request.
Book was approached last week by
Cooper's mother Audrey Robson,
who was looking for a garden fairy to
replace one that was stolen from
Cooper's yard in Seaforth recently.
"I asked the owner if he had any of
the statues left in any of the Giant
Tiger stores but when he told me
there were none, I showed him the
article (in the Huron Expositor) about
Theresa and he got emotional. He
took down my name and number and

us," said Robson last Wednesday.
"I want a picture of that dear, sweet
lady. She's answered our prayers. It
shows you that there is a God that
cares," said Robson, who was on her
way to Stratford to pick up the gift
for her daughter.
Van Den Tempel said she was
happy to give away her fairy statue
after learning about the theft.
"When the owner mentioned it to
me, I told him I'd look after it. I
wasn't at work when the fairy was
picked up but she (Cooper) sent me a
letter that brought tears to my eyes,"
said Van Den Tempel.
Book said he was also moved by
Cooper's situation and wantcd to do
his best to help.
"We try to accommodate people,
especially in cases of downright
genuine need. 1 knew many of our
staff had bought a fairy statue and I
kncw one of them would offer it," he
said.
