St. Columban couple returns
from relaxing vacation 'down east'
Joe and Rose Visser have
returned from a trip "down
east," where they described
the people as very friendly,
helpful and laid back.
They travelled to
Newfoundland, to the
farthest eastern point in
North America, which is
Cape Spears. This is the
place where their friend, Jeff
Timmermans finished his
historic bicycle ride for
Alzheimers. Joe had
travelled with Jeff through
Northern Ontario.
While at Cape Spears they
coincidently met a lady who
had met Jeff when he was
there. They also visited St.
Joseph's Church in Gander,
where Father Moe
Charbonneau, from Dublin,
will be stationed in January
2005. They enjoyed
watching the tides come in
at the Bay of Fundy, some
of which were 52 feet high.
They visited a church in
North Sydney, Cape Breton,
which was made completely
St. Columban
of wood. They found the
streets of St. John's very
hilly.
They also travelled
through New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia and found the
travel through Maine,
Vermont and New
Hampshire very scenic.
They visited the Olympic
site at Lake Placid, New
York.
They had a very relaxing
vacation, but undeniably,
Joe says, the best crops are
here in the St, Columban
area.
Marie Hicknell has
returned from a visit to her
son, Larry and Fran
Hicknell, and family at Lake
Helen (near Nipigon). Her
granddaughter, Shannon
Hicknell, graduated from
Thunder Bay College with
honours, as well as making
the Depn's Honour List.
Shannon qualifies to be an
ambulance attendant, but
hopes to further her studies
as a nurse. Marie also
visited with her grandson,
Laurence, and her great-
grandson, Sebastian.
Descendants of Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Cronin gathered at
the Dublin pavilion to
"celebrate family." Arriving
from several local areas
including, Seaforth,
Mitchell, Dublin and St.
Columban, they enjoyed a
day of games, visiting and
reminiscing. Travelling
from the farthest distance
were Anne Cronin, her
daughter, Keelan and Ken
Robinson, and grandson,
Tyler, from Newmarket.
Parishioners of St.
Columban joined several
other area families on
Thursday, July 29, for the
annual outing to Bingeman
Park.

Dairy 4-H club holds fourth
meeting at local sheep farm
The fourth meeting of the
South Central Huron Dairy
4-H Club was held on
Wednesday June 30 at 7:30
p.m. on the farm of Ewe
Passhan.
Ewe Passhan talked
about his operation, why he
chose sheep and he
explained the layout of his
Karn.
He said he liked to be
close to his animals, so he
designed his barn so that
his living quarters would be
part of it.
Ewe told us some
Hensall Shuffleboard scores
4-H Club
interesting facts about
sheep that none of us knew,
such as: sheep milk freezes
at -1 degree Celsius and
that sheep produce six to
eight litres of milk per day
which contains seven per
cent fat.
Ewe ships his milk to the
Millbank Cheese Factory.
We had a tour of the
Passhan milking parlour
and barn. His sheep are left
inside at night to protect
against predators and
every day they are put out
into a new paddock.
During the tour, Ewe
showed us what he fed to
his sheep.
Each member was given
a handout with information
on how sheep are judged;
we then judged our own
class of sheep.
The next meeting was
held on Saturday July 3 at
9:30 a.m. on the farm of
Paul and Lorraine Franken.
