Local photographer has some fine art

Ever since she was able to
hold a camera, Flo Dyck has
been an avid photographer.
But it wasn't until six years
ago when the RR2 Seaforth
photographer became a
professional.
While Dyck still does
traditional portraits of
families and children, she
specializes in the "middle of
the road" artsy photography
she is becoming known for.
"When you come across a
family who's actually
interested in doing something
a little different you get
really excited," said Dyck.
In her Fine Art Prints,
Dyck makes her subjects
look as if they are in a
situation from 100 years ago,
a period of photography she
really enjoys.
"The way they
(photographers) could
capture the emotion and the
character of the people in
photograph without the use
of colour kind of fascinated
me," said Dyck.
A few years ago, the
former school teacher, started
to look for a way to capture
the old "in the time look"
that she saw in the old
photography.
The first time she tried
capturing the old look, Dyck
was asked to photograph two
girls at a tea party.
Dyck tried to gather all the
clothing, jewelery and all of
FIo Dyck
the old things of that time.
"1 was really excited with
the results," said Dyck.
Since then Dyck has
experiemented with different
situatations including little
boy fishing.
She has also tried to
capture the old feel by using
pastel colours in her black
and white phtography.
"I feel honoured when
families come to me with a
desire to try something new,"
said Dyck. "When most
families want a photograph
of their children they want it
to look like their children."
"What I'm doing is using
present day technology, right
up to the latest programs, to
shoot something that can be
interpreted as something
from a 100 years ago," said
Dyck.
After taking the picture
from her digital camera,
Dyck uses a program called
Photoshop to degrade the
quality of the image.
"If it's supposed to be an
old photograph it shouldn't
be complete, detailed and
digital looking," said Dyck,
who -makes the pictures
grainy and faded.
She said she also adds
brush strokes to the image
and prints the it out on
canvas to make it look like a
painting.
"There is a small group of
people who are interested in
having their children look
like they were shot 100 years
ago," said Dyck.
After a month-long display
at the Goderich Co-op
Gallery, Dyck was asked to
become a resident artist there
because of the. interest
visitors had in her art work.
"It's a new way of putting
imagery and technology
together," said Madeleine
Roske, head of the space
committee at the Goderich
Co-op Gallery.
"What Flo does it's so
This is an example of
new,' said Roske. "But the
thing is, artists through the
years have always used new
technology."
As well as shooting the
Fantasy Portraits, Dyck also
enjoys shooting family
portraits and actors
FIo Dyck's Fine Art Prints which captures the style of photographs from
portfolios.
Her work has been seen in
Maclean's magazine,
catalogues and even in a
bistro in Kincardine.
In 2002, Dyck won the
second highest merit award
from the Professional
Phtoographers of Ontario, an
organization she is a member
of.
"I've guess I've been
really lucky that I've found
people that trust my vision
and want to see what it looks
like," said Dyck.
