She went to you 2 years ago,
And left us so much pain.
I treasure the time I had with her,
I know she was only lent,
I had to give her back to You,
Because she was Heaven sent.
This angel's name is Pearl,
She meant the world to me,
So keep her close beside you now,
For one day that's where I'll be.

Humour and
social conscience
evident in Cricket
and Claudette
By Tim Cumming
Special to The Expositor
Ted Johns is ready to premier his latest play, Cricket and
Claudette, which opens at the Blyth Festival on Aug. 4.
Johns, who was born in Seaforth and grew up in Mitchell, is
as funny in person as his plays are on stage.
When asked what it's iike to be the Blyth Festival's most
produced playwright ever, Johns answers — without missing a
beat — that "it feels a lot better than being the least -produced
playwright!"
It's evident why Johns is considered such a treasure in Blyth.
Not only has he written some of the most consistently
entertaining plays during his decades with the theatre but he
also works tirelessly, like the farm kid he is, to promote the
theatre and its plays.
He alternates between being jovial and whimsical and being
stone-cold serious about issues that mean something to him,
such as the pressures faced by the family farm.
Those traits of humour and social consciousness also show
up in his new play which is part romance, part comedy and part
social commentary. It is mostly, however, a story about people.
There aren't too many people who could create a story about
romance at a Huron County landfill site but if anybody can pull
it off he can.
Johns's long list of plays inelude the hard-hitting one-man
show The Great School Crisis as well as the popular 'Aylmer'
series, He Won't Come in from the Barn and Bamboozled.
Johnsalso wrote a play set in Labrador called Naked on the
North Shore.
When Johns spent time in Labrador the transplanted Perth
County farm boy learned what it's like to be an 'outsider'
living with a close-knit rural group of people with a complex
web of interconnectedness.
Johns uses his knowledge of that experience in Cricket and
Claudette.
The Claudette in the play is a by -the -book urban engineer
who deals with a rural landfill site where the people operate
from a different book entirely.
While she experiences some culture shock dealing with the
intricately intertwined local people, the landfill site's Cricket
becomes quite enamoured with her.
Johns pokes fun at some of our idiosyncracies in the small
towns and villages of Huron County but it is with a gentle
humour and much compassion.
He laughs with his rural neighbours, not at them.
One of the central themes of his work, he said, is the
complexity of people.
"Don't underestimate people," he said. "Don't assume
because they're from a simple place or a simple life that they
are simple people ... they are enormously complex."
Recalling growing up on a farm in Perth County Johns
recalls that "back then you could make a living on 50 acres."
Johns, who still lives in the area, said he considers himself a
defender of a rural culture that is under siege by economic
changes.
"This culture is under siege," he said. "The big farms are
eating the little farms, there aren't enough people for the
schools and the little towns ... in some ways I'm kind of
compensating for that, I'm trying to defend a culture that's
under siege."
The idea for Cricket and Claudette began forming in Johns's
mind a decade ago when he was writing Jakes Place.
At that time landfill sites were running out of space. As the
play developed new issues crept in as well, such as
amalgamations which resulted in strange municipal
bedfellows.
Although there's a little bit of social commentary in this play,
the new work is mostly about people.
Johns calls it "probably the lightest piece I've written since
Country Hearts."
Cricket and Claudette opens at the Blyth Festival on Aug. 4.
It stars Blyth Festival favourites Janet Amos and Jerry
Franken.

ends with assault charges
Huron OPP
A 41 -year-old Walton man
was charged with assault
after a 14 -hour standoff with
Huron OPP when the man
locked himself in his house
after police were called there
during a domestic situation.
4Police arrived at the

a 36 -year-old woman who

The woman showed signs

Five officers from the
Huron OPP were on the
scene most of the day - three
stationed on several sides of
the house - until the
afternoon when one officer
with the OPP Canine unit
