HIV/AIDS rates rising globally and in Huron County
Preventable disease is on the rise around the world and at home, says Huron County HIV/AIDS Network

Elma Plant admits she's not
surprised by a United Nations
report indicating a record high
global rise in the number of
new HIV infections last year.
In fact, given the worldwide
complacency about the
disease, Plant said she's
surprised it's not higher.
"The level of denial and
ignorance that we still face
daily is staggering and just
heartbreaking," said Plant,
education coordinator with
the Clinton -based Huron
County HIV/AIDS Network,

with the AIDS virus has risen
in every region of the world.
Last year, five million people
became infected - more than
in any single year since the
crisis began. Almost 39
million people worldwide are
living with HIV and an
additional 14,000 people
become infected every day.
"Unfortunately globally
reflects locally as well," Plant
said. "1 put it down to just
wishful thinking and
ignorance is bliss. People try
to pretend it's not here
anymore or just hoping that
maybe it will go away.
"We're busier now than we
were five years ago in terms
of our client Kase. We're not
doing as much education
because we're not given as
many requests but we're
doing a lot more client
support."
Plant, who has lived with
AIDS for the last decade, said
she is constantly meeting
more and more people in this
area who are diagnosed with
the disease. She was
diagnosed with HIV through
prenatal testing. Her husband
Don is also infected with the
virus.
More than 20 million
people have died since the
first identified case of AIDS
emerged in 1981.

time is very inaccurate and
harmful," Plant said. "The
reality is it's out here and very
active. We're getting new
diagnoses constantly across
the board - men, women,
young, old, heterosexual,
homosexual.
We have it all
here.
" It ' s
happening
here and the
tragedy with
AIDS is it's
fully
preventable. It
just has to be
good, solid
education and
a change of
behaviour and
it's completely
preventable. It
doesn't have
to happen."
Plant said
•
while AIDS is
typically associated with
young, foolish heterosexuals,
she's recently noticed a lot of
new infections in people over
the age of 50.
"They're either widowed or
divorced and getting back out
into the dating world," Plant
said. "Because they're past
childbearing age they don't
think they have to worry
about getting pregnant and
they're not using condoms
and they're contracting HIV."
Plant said a new education
program is currently being
developed for the 50-70 age
group.
"It's something worth
considering that people have
to stop looking at this as
simply young kids out there
having sex and doing all these
stupid things," Plant said.
"I'm sorry but it's older
people as well that are taking
the same risks for different
reasons. Sadly it's still
resulting in the
same thing -
they're testing
HIV positive."
Education
remains the
best way to
prevent the
disease from
spreading,
Plant said, and
that's why she
continues to
speak at area
schools -
although those
invitations
have gone
down in recent
years.
During a
recent discussion with health
care professionals in the
Goderich area, Plant stressed
the need for physicians to test
patients for the disease if the
chance presented itself.
"I was diagnosed with HIV
through prenatal testing,"
Plant said. "It was offered to
me as part of my regular
prenatal blood work and I just
said sure. It's the only way I
would have been caught.
"Here in Ontario that is
supposed to be one of the
forefronts in HIV testing but
unfortunately a lot of doctors
are uncomfortable offering
HIV tests to their patients. If
we could just get doctors
routinely offering HIV tests as

part of prenatal then at least a
good portion of the
population would be given
HIV testing."
Plant said a lot of youth
today are under the
impression that there's a cure
for the disease.
"Ten years ago we did such
a good job making sure that
every level in school were
getting a degree of AIDS
education but that's not
happening anymore," Plant
said. "We're almost back to
where we were 10 years ago.
"I'll talk to kids who think
birth control pills protect them
from sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) or I'll talk to
kids who think there's a cure
for AIDS.
"We've really gone back 10
years."
During the recent 15th
annual AIDS Conference in
Bangkok, UN secretary
general Kofi Annan said there
must be no more sticking
heads in the sand and no more
hiding behind a veil of apathy
when it comes to the disease.
"What's really needed is
common sense, awareness
and good decision making,"
Plant said. "It's the same
reason why people still drink
and drive - they want to
pretend it'll never happen to
them until they are on the side
of the road and then it's too
late.
"It's tragic on so many
levels."

Union of environmental
groups to focus on pesticides
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
While Friends of the
Bayfield River have not
received a lot of support
from local municipal
governments when asking
for a cosmetic pesticide
ban. FOBR chair Ray
Letheren is enthusiastic that
a new Huron -Bruce group
joining four local
environmental
organizations will bring
more focus to the issue.
"Groups from Saugeen
Shores to Grand Bend have
been fighting a lonely battle
on their own but there is
strength in numbers." he
says.
The Corporation of the
Municipality of Huron East
NOTICE is hereby given that pursuant to the
Municipal Act, S. O. 2001. c.25, as amended,
s.34, the Council of the Corporation of the
Municipality of Huron East proposes to enact a
by-law as described below to stop up and close a
road allowance known as VanEgmond Street
(formerly Church Street), Hamlet of
Egmondville, Tuckersmith Ward.
The proposed by-law and description of the
lands affected may be viewed at the Huron East
Municipal office at the address hereinafter
noted.
On Tuesday August 3"', 2004 at 7:00 p.m. iv the

The group called Citizens
Concerned About Pesticide
Use will bring together
Friends of the Bayfield
River, the Huron -Bruce
Greens, Walkerton Healthy
Community Initiative and
Green Horizons from
Southampton to "bring
awareness about the use of
pesticides in our
communities," says a recent
press release.
Huron -Bruce Greens
candidate in the last federal
election, Dave Vasey, is
linking up groups to
develop local chapters in
each municipality, which
will support the local
organization.
"Our goal will be to put
pressure on municipalities
to stop using pesticides
themselves and to end the
cosmetic application in
towns," says the press
release.
"Every group and person
I have contacted is excited
about the potential for this
group. With the many
dedicated persons involved,
it will be a snowball effect.
We already have individuals
that arc willing to do
pesticide education
presentations," says Vasey
in the press release.
The group is being
formed from people
concerned about the Ontario
College of Family
Physicians report, which
slammed the ,use of
pesticides. It warned of
serious long term effects of
pesticides such as cancer,
birth defects and sterility.
"In rcading the local
papers from all over the
arca, the common thetpe of
many letters to the editor
ahs been individuals
concerned about the use of
pesticides. This group is
similar to the anti-smoking
groups and look at tht
success they have had," he
says.
Vasey says in the press
release that chemical
warfare is not necessary to
kill dandelions.
"Often in hand to hand
combat, humans have the
wit and strength to be
victorious over the deadly
dandelion," he says.
