BURNS: In loving mamory of Joe
Burns, July 15th, 2001.
Three years have passed,
Since you were called away.
How well do we remember,
That sad and weary day.
We think of you often,
And we mention your name,
Since you left us,
Our days have not been the same.

•
NEVERS, Larry Paul: July 23,
2003.
God saw you getting tired,
A cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around you,
And whispered "Come to Me."
With tearful eyes we watched you
And saw you fade away,
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
Many times we thought of you,
Many times we've cried.
If love alone could save you,
You never would have died.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Your tender hands at rest,
God took you home to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
- Always loved by Randy and Lou

LEEMING, Cecilia: In loving mem-
ory of a dear mother, mother -In-law
and grandmother who passed away
7 years ago, July 22, 1997.
Though her smile Is gone forever,
And her hand we cannot touch,
Still we have the memory of the one
we loved so much.
We think of you In silence,
We often speak your name,
But all we have are memories
And your picture In a frame.
Your resting place we visit
And put flowers with care.
But no one knows the heartache,
As we turn and leave you there.
Life must go on, we know it's true,
But It's not the same since we lost
you.
- Sadly missed and forever in our
thoughts, Dan, Peter, Terri,

Brenda Hounam speaks at the Alzheimer Society's annual
general meeting.
Guest speaker
says disease is like
"living in a fog"
By Cheryl Heath
News -Record staff
Brenda Hounam was a 49 -
year -old registered industrial
accountant when she first
noticed something was awry.
It was becoming difficult for
the Paris, Ont. resident and
mother of two to visualize
multiple columns of numbers
like she once could.
It would be several years and
127 appointments later when
Hounam learned she had early-
onset Alzheimer Disease.
It's that protracted process
and the aftermath that were
discussed Tuesday at the
Alzheimer Society of Huron
County's annual general
meeting at the Betty Cardno
Centre in Clinton.
Hounam said the diagnosis
came as a "relief' since she had
been struggling with memory
loss and mood swings for
nearly four years.
Before the diagnosis,
Hounam noticed her patience
was slowly disappearing, she
was misplacing things and
completing tasks was
becoming increasingly
difficult.
She was also working later
and skipping breaks to meet
deadlines.
Wild mood swings were
another issue.
"My initial response to
things was to have a knee-jerk
reaction," she says. "I was
becoming angrier and verbally
explosive -especially in front of
my children, the ones I love
and trust the most." -
Before the diagnosis was
made, Hounam's children
helped make a List of problems
to discuss before her visit to the
doctor who made the diagnosis.
"This was a very difficult
and emotional step for them,
and for me, to take," she says,
noting that their information
greatly aided the physician.
Hounam says her initial
reaction to the diagnosis was
"relic!" because it was a "real"
disease.
The gravity of the situation
hit home when she was
submitting an insurance form
with the Alzheimer diagnosis
on it.
She realized some
relationships with family and
friends, plus the volunteerism
that had always been part of
her life, would have to change.
Hounam, who used td
volunteer 12 hours a week for
the County of Brant, began to
give up her commitments
because of a low energy level,
which she likens to "living in a
fog."
Though Hounam is currently
on medication, which she says
has helped curtail some
symptoms, she nonetheless
recognizes a gradual loss of
control.
"It's like being on a muddy,
slippery slope," she says.
"What lies at the bottom is
frightening."
To slow the process,
Hounam keeps active and has
reminders posted' throughout
the house, like reminders to
turn off the taps.
She follows a daily agenda,
uses an answering machine and
also makes it a point to avoid
stressful situations.
To help retain alertness,
Hounam keeps a journal, does
puzzles and word finds and
plays videogames.
Giving herself more time to
complete tasks is also
paramount.
"Routines have become very
important," she says. "What
once took me half an hour to
get ready has. now become a
two-hour ordeal."
Having a sense of humour, a
close bond with her children
and maintaining some
friendships also help, she says.
In addition, she is a member of
an Alzheimer Society support
group.
"Fortunately, some of my
friends have become my
memory," she says, adding she
has also learned to say "no" to
some things.
One of the most difficult
aspects of dealing with the
disease, she says, is many
people do not understand the
difference between
forgetfulness and memory loss.
"To me, it is the inability to
retain or recall these
memories," she says "My head
always seems to be in u fog and
on some days the fog is thicker
than others."
Since the diagnosis, Hounam
has had many discussions with
her children to ensure they will
have a grasp of what she is
trying to communicate if there
comes a time when she is no
longer able to do so.
She notes that her son
currently lives in the basement
of her home so that she can live
independently for as long as
possible.
She adds that dealing with
the grief from the diagnosis is
ongoing.
"I now live my life one day
at a time," she says.
She notes the slow reversal
of role from caregiver to cared
for is difficult.
She adds that debunking the
myths surrounding Alzheimer
Disease is important.
"The disease is nothing to be
ashamed of," she says.
Hounam credits her two
doctors, children and support
network for making the
transition easier than it could
have been. She also says a
recent new report on the
effectiveness on medication for
Alzheimer Disease sufferers
was inaccurate since they do
help some people, including
her.
"I have hope," she adds.
Cathy Ritsema, executive
director for the Alzheimer
Society of Huron County, notes
the society is seeing more cases
of early onset Alzheimer
Disease now - perhaps because
of more awareness.
Still, she says, fighting the
stigma connected to it is
problematic.
Hounam says a lot of people
think memory loss is a regular
part of aging, but people should
pay attention to symptoms that
go beyond normal
forgetfulness.
According to the Society's
report, there are about 1,100
people living with Alzheimer
Disease in Huron County.
