Shed fire causes between $2,500 - $3,00o damage
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
The Seaforth Fire
Department responded to a
shed fire early last Friday
afternoon at RR4 Walton on
the Hullett-McKillop Road.
At 1:02 p.m. firefighters
were called to a fire in
progress in a shed on the
property of Don and Pat
Dalton.
Dalton noticed smoke
coming out a window of his
work shed as he was doing
chores around his property.
When Dalton arrived, his
tool bench was engulfed in
flames and the fire was
moving up the north wall of
his workshop.
He immediately called both
911 and some neighbours to
help put the fire out.
A group of five friends
showed up to help douse the
flames that were burning on
the workbench in his shed.
"We're all neighbours. We
all look after each other,"
said neighbour Joyce
Braecker.
Dalton, using a garden
hose, had the fire under
control by the time the fire
department arrived.
"He had it pretty well
knocked down with the hose.
It (the fire) was in between
the partitions so our guys tore
them apart to make sure it
hasn't spread any further and
that it was definitely out,"
said District Fire Chief Tom
Phillips.
Dalton was worried that his
combine, which was sitting
10 feet from the fire, might
catch fire. He decided to
move it after his neighbours
arrived.
Philips explained that any
fire the department responds
to in the country is a need for
concern.
"If it's around here you
might have barns and
machinery involved. That
was our concern," said
Phillips.
Earlier, neighbour passing
by dismissed the smoke
because she thought the
Daltons were burning trash.
Damage from the fire has
been estimated at $2,500 to
$3,000.

Huron OPP Senior Constable
Don Shropshall said an
interview with one of the
occupants revealed that he had
been smoking in bed.
"He left shortly after he had
his cigarette and returned to his
apartment just before 10 a.m.,"
Shropshall said. "He unlocked
his apartment door, went in and
smelled smoke. He went into
his bedroom and found that his
mattress was engulfed."
Shropshall said the man
proceeded to drag his mattress
through the apartment in an
attempt to dump it over a
balcony behind the building.
However, when it became too
hot he jumped from the
balcony where he was found by
Triangle Discount manager
Karen Fooks.
Fire crews responded to the
call after reports that smoke
was pouring out of a huilding at
the corner of North Street and
Courthouse Square. They
worked feverishly for hours to
contain a blaze.
"When we got there what we
had was a reported structure
fire," deputy fire chief Steve
Gardiner said. "We got word
from bystanders that there were
people still in the building."
Firefighters used a ladder to

knew we were going to lose
that building." Gardiner said
hours atter the blaze. "You try
to save it but all you can do is
make sure everybody's out.
"We don't put lirefghtcrs in
a situation that they could he
trapped so we performed an
exterior attack and defence
mode and just worried about
the surrounding stnlcture."
Gardiner said finding people
that wcrc still inside recant
crews had 10 conduct a search
of the apartments to make sure
everybody was safe.
During the blaze two firemen
- Dale Bacchlcr and Brian
Hodges - were taken to
hospital suffering from smoke
inhalation. Both nen wcrc
involved in search and rescue
efforts along with Jake Herring.
Crews from Scaforth
eventually joined Goderich
firefighters as an additional
ladder truck was called in to
douse the smoke), roof. As
many as 25 firemen wcrc used
to fight the blaze.
"There were some tense
moments." Gardiner admitted.
"It was a little scary once that
roof did breach and fire started
getting across to the top of the
firewall onto the other roof.
"We were concerned that it
was going to spread but one of
the reasons .wc had the aerial
set up was to protect thc
adjoining roof."
Thc blaze left as many as
nine people homeless. An
emergency command post was
established in Courthouse Park
and a drop-off depot for those
affected by the fire was quickly
set up at Knox Presbyterian
Church.
Many local businesses have
set up donation boxes to help
those affected by the fire.
Members of thc Celtic Blue
Highlanders also offered to
help by donating their weekly
piping down the sun collection
to those affected by the fire.
Police set up roadblocks on
Thc Square and smoke from
the fire closed a number of
businesses for the day
including Uniquely Yours,
Cravings, Something
Irresistible and Schaefer's
Ladies Wear. Rosemary's
Ladics and Men's Wear on
North Street was also affected
by the fire. The Square between
Hamilton and North Streets
remained closed until 6 a.m.
