Women's lawn bowling team advances to nationals

A Huron -Perth women's
-lawn bowling team that hit
the jack -pot at the provincial
championships is aiming for
gold at next months national
competition in British
Columbia.
Mitchell resident Carol
Carter, a member of Seaforth
Lawn Bowling Club, and her
three teammates from the
Exeter club won gold at the
provincial championships in
Burlington, last month.
Carter says the team works
well together because of the
support and co-operation the
women show for each other.

The Seaforth Lawn
Bowling Club held a mixed
pairs or ladies pairs
tournament at the greens on
Wednesday. First place went
to Glen and Glennis Keone of
Stratford with 3 wins and 44.
Second was Marjorie Leslie
and Marilyn Lancaster of St.
Marys also with 3 wins and
41.
Lee Ryan and Carol Carter
were high two game winners
and in fifth place were Keith
Snell and Jean Bewley from
the home club. Mitchell's
Ken Roth and Donna Rose
were fourth with Dave and
Selena Ducklow sixth.
Consolation prizc went to
Bob Thomson and Doris
Hackney of Exeter.
Evening jitneys are being
well attended this year.
A warm welcome to Anne
Wood and Donelda Barry
who are trying out the sport
of lawn bowling.
Tuesday evening winners
were Joyce Matzold, Carol
Hey and Neil Beuerman.
On Friday evening, twenty
four were out for another
special events evening and
everyone enjoyed the
strawberries and ice cream
between games.
Winner of the spider was
Mary Finlayson and the prize
was donated by Rick Wood.
Jitney winners were Fred
Tilley, Jean Bewley, Cliff
Waddington and Jack Muir.

The team is comprised of
Carter, the lead, skip Jo Anne
Bugler, vice Gloria McFalls
and second Dianne Terry.
The team practices once a
week doing drills and
exercises to prepare for the
national championships
where games can last up to
two and a half hours long.
She first learned the ins
and outs of lawn bowling
when she was 20 from her
father. She took a break from
the sport after she became a
mother and has been bowling
for the past 25 years.
Carter, who took two
seasons off competitive lawn
bowling to concentrate on
other commitments, said
she's "pumped" to be back
on the team and hopes to win
gold again this year.
