Second walk-in clinic added
A second walk-in clinic will
begin on Aug. 5 from 6-8
p.m. at the Seaforth Medical
Clinic to help accommodate
orphan patients in the area.
With Dr. Ken Rodney's
upcoming retirement and the
loss of Dr. Vince Tong, who
left Seaforth earlier this year
for Vancouver, B.C., the
clinic is goi.4, :6 uuu u
Thursday evening walk-in
clinic to the already existing
Tuesday clinic to
accommodate patients
without their own family
doctors.
Seaforth Medical Clinic's
manager Mary Fisher says
that with up to 30 patients
seeking care from the one
doctor on duty on Tuesday
night's walk-in clinic, a
second was proposed.
"We've been so
overwhelmed," she says,

adding that while the doors
have been locked at 8 p.m.,
doctors have stayed to see
every patient sometimes until
10 p.rn.
"We never turn anyone
away. It's a long night but a
needed service for the
community," says Fisher.
Fisher says it's difficult to
nuv r. uv.r many orphan
patients exist in the Seaforth
area but local doctors are
planning to meet to discuss
how best to care for them.
"We can't do physicals or
drivers' medicals at the walk-
in clinic because we don't
have the time there. We're
going to have to discuss what
to do," she says.
While no doctors have
been found yet to replace the
two Seaforth has lost, Fisher
remains hopeful that at least
one more can he found.

"We're actively recruiting
all the time," she says, adding
that patients of both Dr. Tong
and Dr. Rodney should make
sure they're on a waiting list
that is being made to pass on
to a new doctor when he or
she comes to town.
Fisher says another way
that the Seaforth clinic is
hoping to ease the pressure
with a decreasing number of
doctors is to register patients
with Telehealth Ontario
services.
Patients who register will
have their family doctors
notified any time they use the
Telehealth service so that
follow-ups can be done.
Telehealth is a provincial
service where registered
nurses provide a 24-hour
hotline to answer medical
questions and advise patients
about whether or not they
should seek help at a hospital
emergency.
"The doctors will be
carrying an extra pager
around in case Telehealth
calls to tell then that one- of
their patients is having an
emergency," says Fisher.
