businesses.
Ryan thinks it is a great
program because it allows
students an opportunity to
open a summer business.
In early May, Ryan took
out a loan to start her
summer business in
Seaforth, Amanda's Garden
Centre. "It was fun. It was
great to stay in town to
work where you know
everyone," said Ryan.
Sponsored by the Ontario
government's Ministry of
Economic Development
and Trade, the Summer
Company program was
created to help inspire
students aged 15 to 29 to
choose a career as an
entrepreneur.
This summer, thc
Ministry of Economic
Development and Trade
granted 250 Summer
Company awards, of which
six are from Huron County.
The program provides up
to $1,500 to cover start-up
costs and after successful
completion of the program
the students are eligible for
an additional $1,500 award.
Students also had to
participate in business
training workshops. Topics
included record keeping,
bookkeeping, and business
goals.
Bowers, who is going
into Grade 11 at St. Anne's
in 'Clinton, decided to start
his own business, Greg's
Firewood, after a neighbour
offered to sell him 127 tree
tops to make into fire
wood.
Bowers bought the tree
tops for $5 a piece and
hopes to turn the wood into
close to 100 face cords of
firewood.
"I think I'II he able to
sell it all because the
demand for firewood is
high," said Bowers.
He hopes to have the
wood ready for delivery in
mid-August. Bowers will
he selling the face cords,
which are a little more than
32 square feet of wood, for
$55 if they arc picked up or
a little more if they have to
be delivered.
"Heating costs for
electricity and natural gas
have gone up so people
might be interested in using
firewood to heat their
homes," said Bowers.
With the $1,500 for start
up costs, Bowers purchased
safety equipment. a new
chainsaw and registered his
business.
Bowers has had previous
experience running summer
businesses such as selling
chickens and cutting grass.
He said this business is
more difficult to run
because you have to keep
financial records in order to
qualify for the additional
$1,500.
Starting your own
summer job, "is a big risk
if you don't get the
money," said Bowers.
Next year Bowers hopes
to continue his business.
For more information about
firewood sales call Greg at

Seaforth to cap off summer
with two new store fronts
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
This summer, the Seaforth
and area community may be
losing a possible business
opportunity, but it will be
gaining two new enterprises -
Cork 'N' Caps and Bridges
of Seaforth.
CORKS 'N' CAPS
Seaforth residents will be
able to pop their own caps
later this summer when a
new brew -your -own business
opens downtown.
Retired Goderich banker
Ron Harris decided to open
Corks 'N' Caps in Seaforth
after he realized there were
no brew -your -own businesses
between Mitchell and
Clinton.
Harris has been brewing
his own wine for four years
and said opening up his own
shop is a dream.
He says brewing wine
yourself is, "kind of a hobby.
A lot of people are doing it
and it's a lot larger than one
thinks," said Hams.
Located behind Sumthing
Special at 100 Main St. S.,
the business will feature
brew -you -own beer and wine
priced $100 to $175 for a kit.
"This industry just really
started to.blossom 15 years
ago and it's just something
that took off," said Harris.
The business is expected to
open sometime in August
after Harris is approved for
a license to brew
alcohol on-site. ,
BRIDGES OF SEAFORTH
The sales office for a 248 -
home adult lifestyle
community in Seaforth
opened last' week bridging
the community with its
newest addition.
Last week, the Bridges of
Seaforth sales presentation
office hosted an open house
at thc Main Street sales
office.
"The residents, merchants
and everyone in town have
been just so wonderful," said
sales person Karen Jefferies.
Bridges of Seaforth
decided to pick the store
front at 79/81 Main St.
because of its visibility.
"It's a bustling little town
here and we wanted to be
where we were visible," said
Jefferies.
The Bridges of Seaforth, a
248 home development
which includes a 16,000
square foot recreation
complex, will be located at
the Seaforth Golf Club.
Currently, Bridges is
selling their pre -construction
phase with houses ranging
from $195,990 to $341,000
and they have sold five units
already.
Jefferies said that she has
seen lots of local interest as
well as interest from London,
Kitchener, and the Toronto
arca.
MILLBANK CHEESE
The former Quality Jersey
building in Seaforth has been
purchased by Millbank
Cheese and Cold Storage.
After relocating the
equipment and the supply
quota associated with the
building to the Millbank
factory, the building was put
on the market and has an
interested local buyer.
A small amount of plant
supply quota, 298,000 litres
of cow cheese a year, was
associated with the Quality
Jersey plant.
"The plant supply quota is
not a large amount and if you
didn't have something else
happening in your cheese
plant you couldn't make a go
of it with the volume we got
from Quality Jersey," said
Edward Bennett president of
Millbank Cheese and Cold
Storage.
The plant also contained
used cheese making
equipment which Milbank is
now using in their cheese
company.
According to Bennett, used
cheese making equipment is
hard to come by.
The former tenant, Quality
Jersey, set the 8,000 sq. foot
plant, located at 112 High
St., up for food processing
before they closed their doors
last year.
He explained if they did
not already have their cheese
plant in Millbank established
they would consider opening
a cheese plant here.
"If we didn't have a cheese
plant in Millbank we would
have been very pleased to do
something in Seaforth," said
Bennett.
