After careful deliberation the members of the Brussels club decided that because of low membership, the club could not continue to operate as it was. "There were a lot of factors involved. We weren't getting enough new members to make up for the ones that were having health problems and had to quit," said Jean Bewley. Of the 14 people who were members in Brussels last year, five of them became sick with only two new members joining. The members of the Club decided to close the doors after the two greenskeepers took ill and no replacement could be found. Bewley, the Brussels Club's secretary treasurer for the 10 years, said that the club needed more than 20 members to still be feasible. So far, four members from the Brussels club have joined in Seaforth. Mary Finlayson, of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club, said the closing of Brussels club will boost membership in Seaforth and "will help the Seaforth Club." Finlayson said the Seaforth club is willing to take on any new members. "We have one of the largest greens in the area for lawn bowling," said Finlayson. Bewley is not sure where all the interest in the sport is going, but she suggests younger people with busier schedules may be adding to the demise of the clubs. "It is happening quite frequently. I don't know what the thing (behind it) is. I guess younger people are so busy with running their kids to sports," said Bewley. While the future of the Brussels club is still up in the air, Bewley hopes that a solution can be found. "We still hope that it can be started up again. We'll always hope that. Somebody will have to do that soon before the property is disposed of," said Bewley. with files from Hilary Long Scoreboard BASEBALL KIPPEN GUN CLUB June 23 Trap Tim Hoff 25, Wayne Peachey 25, Brad Mann 25, Bevan Brown 25, Brent Lees 24, Brittany Caldwell 24, Bill Cameron 24, Jordan Ritchie 23, Chuck Kreiger 23, Doug Dalrymple 22, Drew Anderson 22, Rusty Gibson 21, Spencer Bainish 17. This game brings to a close the first half of the locals season. St. Columban sits in last spot(ninth place) with a 1 win 5 loss and 2 draw record. The Irish are only a win (three points) out of sixth place though. The locals have lost four games by one goal and have proven to be a tough contest for all competitors.
