Vasey, Joslin both pleased
with their parties'

They may not have
finished in the top three, but
Huron -Bruce Green and
Christian Heritage Party
candidates Dave Vasey and
Dave Joslin are pleased
with how their parties fared
in last week's federal
election.
"We did better than
before because a lot of our
votes moved to the
Canadian Alliance and with
the dissolution of the party
they have moved back,"
Joslin explained. "Sure
we'd always like more
votes, but in general I'd
have say I'm pleased."
"I'm really pleased. We've
broken away from the
fringe and now we need to
be able to compete with the
other major parties," Vasey
commented.
"We went up a
percentage point from the
provincial election and
that's pretty good support
considering our low budget
campaign."
Vasey received 1,501
votes and Joslin had 950
votes in the June 28 federal
election that saw Huron -
Bruce Liberal MP
incumbent Paul Steckle re-
elected for an
unprecedented fourth term
with a total of 25,311 votes.
Conservative candidate
Barb Fisher finished third
with 15,669 votes, while
New Democratic Party
candidate Grant Robertson
had 6,644 votes and
Marijuana Party candidate
Glen Smith was sixth with
650 votes.
"We're touching on areas
that people can only agree
with - a common sense
approach," Vasey said,
adding honesty was also a
key element to his
campaign.
"Wherever 1 went, if l
didn't know or understand
an issue I would say so,
instead of pretending that 1
did and 1 think people
appreciate that."
Looking hack over his
recent campaign Joslin said
he'd like to focus on
"getting more literature into
peoples' homes" during his
next campaign, but said he
was pleased with the media
coverage.
As a first-time candidate,
Vasey said the 2004 federal
election was a great
learning experience.
However, voter turnout
was an issue of concern.
"I really want to push for
proportional representation.
Voting numbers arc
decreasing every year
because it's 'hard for people
to vote either Conservative
or Liberal based on strategy
rather than voting for
another party and candidate
they support," he explained.
. Elections Canada
results
reported a voter turnout of
' 66 per cent with 50,710 of
Huron -Bruce's 76,813
residents casting a ballot.
Joslin wasn't as worried
about the voter turnout.
"If you think about it, 60
per cent is close to two out
of every three eligible
voters and that's not too bad
in comparison to other
countries," he added.
Vasey said he was also
pleased with the national
election results and the
creation of a minority
government led by Prime
Minister Paul Martin.
Joslin wasn't as
impressed with the Liberal
minority government. He
predicted "big spending,
big taxation and a poor
economy."
Wasting little time, Joslin
has already jumped hack
into his work and is looking
forward to continuing his
involvement with his
church. However, he's not
expecting too much of a
break.
"As soon as Martin looks
at t'he polls and thinks he
can win. I can see him
calling another election."
Already looking forward
to the next election. Vasey
said he plans to spend his
time off getting a "support
basis" for the Huron -Bruce
Green Party, making them a
strong competitor for the
next federal or provincial
vote. •

Boyd Devereaux
signs with Phoenix
Seaforth's Boyd
Devereaux signed with The
Phoenix Coyotes after
becoming unrestricted last
week when the Detroit Red
Wings did not give him a
qualifying offer.
Devereaux, 26, signed a
one-year, $650,000 US deal
plus an option for a second
year. He could earn up to
$1.6 million over two years
depending on performance
clauses.
"Boyd was looking for
fresh opportunities with a
clean slate," Detroit Red
Wings' general manager
Ken Holland told the
Detroit Free Press.
':We made a pitch to keep
him prior to July 1, at a big
pay decrease. I wish him
well."
The 6-2, 195 -pound
Devereaux had six goals
and nine assists in 61 games
last season, his fourth with
the Wings.
"Boyd is another young
player who brings elite
speed to our hockey club,"
Coyotes GM Mike Barnett
said in a press\ release.
"While with the Red Wings,
he gained invaluable
experience as a member of
their Stanley Cup
championship team."
"We believe that Boyd
can take on a more
expanded offensive role
with our hockey club after
Boyd Devereaux •
having played alongside
many future Hall of Fatners
in Detroit. He brings the
work ethic that it takes to
win consistently in the
NHL."
Devereaux has played
seven seasons in the NHL
since being drafted by
Edmonton in the 1996 entry
draft. He played three
seasons with Edmonton
beginning in 1997 before
signing with Detroit as a
free agent in 2000.
