municipal buildings,
McLean says the
accessibility committee
will not have jurisdiction
over private property, such
as downtown storefronts.
But, he adds that
committee will provide
help to community groups
who want advice about
accessibility.
"We're not going to be
able to touch the store you
can't get into. But, I think
that may be where the
legislation will end up at
some point," he says.
This summer,
municipalities throughout
Huron County are being
asked to conduct an audit
of their buildings, looking
for accessibility problems
they wish to solve.
"There might he the
need for more accessible
washrooms, automatic
door openers or lower
counter heights. There
could be problems that
still exist," he says.
As well, the committee
will look at the legislation
-and recommend
improvements to both
facilities and services
offered by the county's
municipalities.
"There are little things
we can change to make
life barrier -free in a true
sense, to allow an
accessible enjoyment of
life," says McLean.
Huron East Clerk -
Administrator Jack
McLachlan says Huron
East will be conducting its
audit of the accessibility
of municipal buildings in
August.

Tourist information kiosk
planned for Seaforth Lion's Park
dy Hilary Long
Student reporter
Planning is underway for
tourist information kiosks in
Seaforth and Brussels.
Ralph Laviolette, Huron
East's economic
development officer, said he
has asked a number of
different clubs and groups in
the Seaforth area for
funding for an information
kiosk Seaforth's Lions Park.
"This way it can be seen
by people," said Laviolette.
He said that he has a lot
of interest in the
information booth but no
commitment from anyone
yet.
Laviolette has already
hired a university summer
student to work at the kiosk
in July and August.
"If there is no kiosk this
year the student will be
working on economic
development in the
community," he said.
"The response that I am
getting is that jt is an
interesting and good idea,"
said Laviolette. "I have
received encouragement
from members of the
groups, hut no commitment
yet."
He said that this kiosk
would compliment a county-
wide project called
Shakespeare to the
Shoreline. which will
encourage tourism in this
arca.
In a memo he wrote to
local clubs and groups, he
noted the only effective site
in the area to provide
information about all thc
goods and services Huron
County offers is thc
Goderich tourism office.
But, the Godcrich site is
not structured to promote
events or accommodations
outside of Goderich.
"Did you know for
instance, that thc Huron
County Tourism Office 800
number that is advertised
widely in newspapers and
brochures is answered by
the Goderich Tourism office
with the words, 'Welcome
to Goderich,'" he wrote,
adding that thc Godcrich
site's primary aim is to
increase Goderich exposure.
He said Seaforth's Lions
Park, located at the entrance
of the town, is easy to sec.
"The advantage of it is
that it has a picnic arca and
washrooms nearby,"
Laviolette said.
The Brussels location will
be at the Brussels
crossroads across from the
library.
The Huron Tourism
Association and the
Heritage and Culture
Partnership have said they
will help fill the kiosk with
information about
attractions in the county.
Laviolette said that while
he is looking for volunteers.
he needs commitment first
adding that it is only
temporary building for the
summer.
In the memo he suggestec
the Optimists. Womens'
Institute, Lions Club anc
other groups in the area pool
resource to get the site
staffed.
"It is a great opportunity
for business to advertise
their availability." he said
"The kiosks will divert
drivers to the downtowr
arca rather than heading
down Highway 8."
Laviolette said that thc
locations, both in Seaford
and Brussels, are located it
easy -to -spot locations anc
attract those travelling or
Hwy. 8 and those coming
from thc north.
He wrotc, "We can take t
lesson from the Clinton site
- it does not appear to be
widely visited because it
not visible from the
highway and it is too close
to downtown and stoplight
traffic."
Laviolette's memo alsc
noted the Bayfield site has t
steady stream of visitori
over the weekends. It h
staffed by Chamhei
volunteers and a summei
university student.
