News THE HURON 1XPO$ITOA, .IMM OS, 11004.11 West Nile virus risk in Huron County lower than last year, says local health unit official By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff While there has not been much worry about the West Nile Virus in Huron County this season, residents are still being asked to take precautions but not to overreact. Neither the Huron County Health Unit nor the municipality of Huron East have heard much public outcry about the disease which grabbed news headlines last year. "It doesn't seem to be as major of an issue as it was last year," said Matt Moxham, of the West Nile Virus team with the health unit. This summer in Huron County, there have been 28 dead crows and blue jays found but none have tested positive for the disease which is deadly for the birds. Although the risk of West Nile virus is low, the public is still being asked to take personal protection measures to guard against the disease. Along with asking people to use a DEET - based insect repellent and wearing light clothing that covers your body, the health unit is encouraging people to empty out any possible standing water on their property. "West Nile Virus is not about eradicating every mosquito in the county. You're always going to have that and that's why we're advocating the personal protection measures," said Moxham. Mosquitoes breed best in shallow water that has been standing three to four days and is between 10 to 15 degrees C . This summer's continual rain and wide - Jason Middleton photo Larry Hugill, of Seaforth, pours vegetable oil in a municipal drain near his home to kill mosquito larva. ranging temperatures have prevented the mosquito population from exploding. "The best thing that's happened this year is that we've had so much rain that the mosquitoes really haven't had a chance to breed and reproduce," said Public Works Coordinator John Forrest. When Seaforth resident Larry Hugill was doing yard work at.the side of his house he noticed that there was mosquito larva forming in the municipal drain on his property. Failing to kill the larva himself, Hugill decided to phone the municipality for a solution. He was told that adding a quarter cup of vegetable oil would kill the larva and remain environmentally friendly. Hugill took the advice and added vegetable oil to the six drains in his sub -division. "You can go out and spend $14 for a larva killer from the hardware store or you can put a quarter cup (of vegetable oil) down there. It'll probably cost you 50 cents," said Hugill. Both Moxham and Forrest warn that -West Nile prevention is not about killing every mosquito you see. "Thinking you're going to get rid of every mosquito — that's a near impossible task," said Moxham. Three summer students, hired by the health unit to find and identify if there are any West Nile carrying mosquitoes, have not found any of the disease carrying insects in Huron Country this year. The health unit has hired three summer students to find and identify if there are any breeds of mosquitoes in the area. "We're not going to kill the mosquito population. All we're going to do is try and monitor to see whether any of them have West Nile Virus," said Forrest.
