Kevin Gaffney honoured
at graduation memorial
The initiative of
two local families,
Maureen Lang and
daughters, Katie
and Mandi, and Bev Shea, along with her
son, Josh, has brought into being a fitting
memorial on the grounds at St. Columban
School in memory of Kevin Gaffney, a
Grade 8 student at the school who passed
away earlier this year.
The families worked together to fund raise
so that the memorial could be possible.
Kevin's parents, Don and Anna Gaffney
were present as the memorial was dedicated.
Grade 8 students read poems and readings to
honour their friend. A stone bench was
placed near a tree which was planted, so that
anyone could sit and think of Kevin and
pray for him.
The Grade 8 class celebrated their
graduation with mass and a graduation
ceremony held in St. Patrick's Church in
Dublin. Father Moe Charbonneau presided
at mass.
Valedictorians for the graduation were
Brendan Ryan and Laura Dekroon.
Don and Anna Gaffney presented the
Kevin Gaffney Christian Caring and Sharing
Award, made in honour of their son, to Katie
Lang and Brendan Bilcke. In a poignant
moment, supported by sustained applause,
Ryan and Danny Gaffney accepted their
brother, Kevin Gaffncy's diploma. After the
St. Columban
ceremony,
Maureen Lang
presented the
Gaffneys with a
framed picture of all the graduates, which
had been signed by them.
The graduation festivities ended with a
dance in the St. Columban school gym.
Former students now in Grade 9 were the
DJs for the music.
Earlier this past week, the students at the
school held a talent show during which
everyone had the opportunity to share their
talents. There was singing, dancing, step -
dancing and guitar playing. The students are
now looking forward to the summer
holidays.
