SDHS Grade r2 class of 1969 reunites after 35 years
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Fifteen members of the
Grade 12 class of 1969
reminisced about micro -mini
skirts and Teen Town dances
during their time at Seaforth
GRADUATION
Christopher
David Clayton
son of Rachelle and David
Clayton, and grandson of
Harry and Mabel Nesbitt
graduated May 30, 2004
from the California State
University, Fullerton. He
attained a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Radio, T.V. Film
and is apprenticing at Fox
Studio, Los Angeles,
California.
District High School on
Sunday.
"We had to sneak our
slacks or jeans out of the
house since we weren't
allowed to wear anything but
skirts to school,"
remembered reunion
organizer Kathy Dale.
"But, boy, the skirts got
short. We could whip up an
outfit from a yard of material
and you'd have a cute little
dress. It would have been
more respectable if we'd
been allowed to wear pants,"
added Yvonne (Hoegy)
Coultes.
Sunday's reunion in at the
Betty Cardno Centre in
Clinton was the first time the
class has gotten together in
35 years.
And, while 30 invitations
were sent out to a potential
90 classmates, Dale is hoping
that more can be tracked
down for another reunion
next year.
"It's been hard to find
people," she says.
Both William Brown and
John Kassies said they
attended the reunion because
it's been such a long time
since they've seen their
classmates.
"I just wanted to see the
old gang again," said Brown.
"1 haven't seen some of
these people since the last
day of high school. You lose
contact and I had no idea
where they went," said

Kassies.
Dale reminisced about an
American Bandstand -type
television show she and some
classmates attended at
CKNX in Wingham, called
Up Tight during their Grade
12 year. •
"I was the teen rep for our
class and it was a big deal.
The cheerleaders did a little
display," she said.
For Coutles, a bigger deal
was that year's formals.
"In our day, we made our
own dresses. And, the hair
was just like today - up in
buns with curls," she said.
Shirley (Harris) Wolfkamp
remembered her favourite
thing at the time was Teen
Town, a Friday night dance
at the Seaforth arena or the
Lions Park Pavillion.
"There was always a live
band and more important
than that, all your friends
would be there," she said.
She said there were stag
lines with girls and boys
lined up on either side of the
dance floor, which the boys
had to cross the ask the girls
to dance.
"We did the Jerk and go-go
dancing was big then. We all
wore go-go boots and mini
skirts. I enjoyed my teen
years," she said.

at the Bayfield "Pay" as well
on Friday nights.
As well, she remembered
being involved in volleyball,
basketball and golf, winning
WOSSA championships in
volleyball and basketball for
most of her high school
career.
"The girls' teams had a run
on WOSSA championships
at the time," she said.
Dale said the next 1969
SDHS reunion will likely
happen next year on the last
Sunday in May.
