As the manager of family
and community solutions
with Kitchener -Waterloo
Counseling, DeJong started
to notice trends with a lot of
her clients.
"I was trying to rack my
brain around what was going
on here," says DeJong.
One day DeJong found that
instead of researching similar
cases at the library she was
instead writing the first draft
of the hook.
"It (the book) really is a
model to show us how to
make your best choices so
you will be happy and will
live your hest life," says
DeJong..
The 160 -page book took
DeJong three years to write
and she says that is was one
of the biggest obstacles that
she's faced in her life.
"1 was not a great English
student to be quite honest,"
said DeJong.
The book is divided into
five sections, decision
making, action plan.

together the sections create
the acronym DANCE.
"When people are in our
office we might give them
some strategies to try. But
then it's 'How do I remember
what Deb told me to do?"'
says DeJong.
The acronym DANCE
gives both clients and readers
an easy way of remembering
what they are supposed to do.
"So it helps them make the
transition of talking about
something in session (or
reading) to actually doing it
in their life," she says.
The book, which costs
$18.95. was released earlier
this year and DeJong is
currently doing a book tour
around the area.
"I think (the book) it has
the potential to put someone,
if they're at a crossroads in
their life, of making a healthy
choice for themselves or a
not so healthy choice. It gives
them the depth needed to live
their best life," says DeJong.
She says that life decisions
such as getting married are
huge deci ' ns and should he
made care Ily.
"They ake, decisions
without putting a whole lot of
thought into them. And our
decisions make up front have
the greatest impact on life
satisfaction and life
happiness," says DeJong.
Growing up in the
Mitchell -area, DeJong says
the small town mindset has
influenced her career. life and
the hook.
"1've gained a lot from
Mitchell and I want to thank
everyone that shared the
dance floor of life with me
there." she said.
"I've learned something
from every relationship I've
been in and now I'm able to
share that message outside
the community and hopefully
we'll go provincial."
