Participants in the more than two=hour event, which was sponsored by the Huron County Federation of Agriculture, included incumbent Paul Steckle (Liberal), political newcomer Dave Vasey (Green), Brussels -area resident Dave Joslin (Christian Heritage Party), political veteran Barb Fisher (Conservative Party of Canada) and Paisley - area farmer Grant Robertson. Glen Smith, a Tiverton businessman and Marijuana Party candidate, was not present for the debate. Agriculture proved to be a main topic of debate as candidates were given two minutes apiece to answer a series of both written and oral question. The Green Party candidate says his party will create a new framework for farmers to work with so that they can receive their fair share of the food dollar. Robertson says the NDP would introduce the Family Farm Act, which would take untold dollars out of the hands of meat packers and put them back into the hands of producers. He also used the opportunity to note the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) refused to participate in a vote in the House of Commons that would have forced meat packers to open their books to the government to ensure gouging was not taking place. Meanwhile, the CPC candidate defended her party's stand, noting the packers were asking for a neutral body to review the book "The bottom line is the Liberal government had the ability to do something. After all, they are a majority government," adds Fisher. The Christian Heritage Party candidate (CHP) says while subsidies are generally viewed poorly by his party, it would nonetheless support such a maneuvre because of the current state of the industry. He says such moves are necessary given that the U.S. and European Union (EU) heavily subsidize their own farmers. Steckle says the government would continue with initiatives, like the Canadian Agriculture Income Stabilization (CAIS) program that are designed to help those in financial crisis. The subject of CAIS brought with another question about said program's efficiency. A major drawback of the program, say critics, is it does not address foreign farm policy interference. "Clearly, the CAIS program has major problems," says the NDP candidate, noting levels of support must increase. Rot?ertson adds big firms must be prevented from gobbling up subsidies designed to aid farm families. The CPC candidate says CAIS does nothing to address an uneven playing field. "Not everything is solved with money," she says, adding a stronger relationship needs to be built with not only the U.S., but other potential markets as well. The CHP candidate says the Liberal government's poor working relationship with Americans doesn't help the situation. "I think it was scandalous that Prime Minister Paul Martin was not at (former U.S. president) Ronald Reagan's funeral," he says. "That kind of anti -Americanism has got to go." Steckle says the biggest problem is there is an "enormous supply of food" and not enough markets to work with. He says Canada must build on relationships outside of the U.S. and EU in order to remain competitive. The Green Party candidate adds it is no small coincidence that U.S. beef producers are enjoying record- breaking profits while Canadian producers sit on the sidelines. sA1MPYs TREE SERV10E 6 REMOVAL , removal & clean-up et truck service sh chipping p Grinding 'awn Rolling Dave Barnard to . 519.482.3976 AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING SPECIALISTS Licensed for Sheet Metal.
