While teaching her own
children is not an
uncommon situation in
small towns, Craig says it
was challenging to keep
home and school separate.
"Only once did my son
ask at school if his friend
could spend the night. I
said he'd have to ask his
Mom when he got home
that night and it never
happened again." she says.
Craig spent her entire
career teaching in Huron
County with the Huron -
Perth Catholic District
School Board at school
including St. Joseph in
Clinton. St. Columban, St.
Boniface, Our Lady of
Mount Carmel and St.
Marys in Goderich.
Shc also spent four years
as coordinator of
curriculum and program
for science and technology
at the hoard office but her
love of children brought
her back to a school before
retirement.
"Kids are very rewarding
and challenging and 1

I'd made a difference for at
least one kid." she says.
Over 33 years. Craig said
she's seen life speed up
with an accelerated pace to
the school year and the
stress that places on
children.
But. she's also seen
teachers gain more
knowledge of how students
learn and grow. which has
particularly helped
students with special
needs.
"I think we're more
aware, better prepared and
I hope we're doing a better
job." she says.
Craig recently received
an e-mail from a colleague
saying that she must feel
good retiring at "the top of
her game."
"1 took that as quite a
compliment." she says.
St.James secretary retiring
.`quietly, on her own terms'
By Susan Hundertmark

As quietly and
unobtrusively as possible,
St. James secretary
Audrey O'Rourke is
retiring after 32 years at
Seaforth's Catholic
school.
"It's been my life. I've
enjoyed the kids and thc
smiles they bring but I'm
going to get out of here
before the third generation
comes through," she says.
After answering phones,
handing out band-aids and
helping with the
adminstration of the
school for so many years,
O'Rourke says it's time to
do some gardening and
"put my feet up."
One of the biggest
challenges she's faced in
her career is the
